The Future Looks Bright

Not every look forward, back in the past, saw a rosy and optimistic future. Not every future ended in some kind of enlightened universe like Star Trek.

Eugene Burdick and Harvey Wheeler’s Fail Safe, Pat Frank’s Alas, Babylon, and Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove—among many others—saw a rosy future of sorts, but rosy from the color of exploding nuclear bombs. In fact, even Star Trek saw us having to survive the atomic horror of WWIII.

Of course, in our current enlightened times, all of this seems quaint and old fashioned. Humans have evolved past such horrors. Right?
