How exactly does this take the picture and send to the phone? What is the hole on the top for because if this is where the light or image is taken then my phone is too new to use this device for my old photo types.

You need to tap on his link to then see the video and added info.
Basically it is a precisely cut and folded cardboard box where your film is manually moved on the lower platform and illuminated. Your (not included) smartphone then can take pictures of the image on the film.
Like a slide viewer but you record with smartphone.
