Acer Space-Saving Multimedia Desktop with Intel Dual Core Processor

220W power supply? Eep! I didn’t know they put anything that low in computers these days. I’d suspect that wouldn’t last too long, but not hard to replace either. An unexpected expense, though, if you’re unsuspecting Joe Computer User.

Can anyone confirm or deny the existence of a 1394 4-pin firewire port on the front of this machine? I think I see one but the specs don’t say it’s there?

Everybody should go on eBay and find themselves an old IBM click key keyboard for about $40, and find out what a good keyboard is supposed to feel like. (Mechanical switches with SPRINGS in them, not foam plastic). Every keyboard sold today is cheezy. Amazingly. That’s where everything happens! Mice; Meh!

I believe you are correct, good sir.

And you will want Windows 7. I am running Windows 7 RTM right now (legally by the way - I am a member of MSDN-AA), and it is miles better than Vista.

Actually, USB 3 is just about to hit the market, and then I think all bets are off on that thought.

I first thought it might make a very compact HTPC, but the lack of even one PCI slot makes the inexpensive solution of simply sliding a PCI tuner card in impossible…

Maybe for the dorm room when you don’t want your kid to waste all his time and all of your tuition with a too high end a gaming experience ??

Many programs won’t run on ANY 64 bit system, that’s been as true today with Vista as with any previous version of windows, it’s something you should learn when you’re researching. It’s not a new problem due to Vista, my wife’s 64bit Vista runs just as good as my 32bit Vista.

About the video card:

It’s an nVidea G100, which is a renamed GeForce 9400GT with 512mb of dedicated video RAM. It should be enough to play most of the current games (albeit not at maximum graphics settings). It’ll also run Vista pretty smoothly.

The E2200 is a 2.2GHz CPU, but the specs for this system say it’s running at 2.4… which is it? I don’t imagine Acer is overclocking their refurbs…

Whatever happened to CARD SLOTS?

Card slots are the first thing you sacrifice when considering compact computers.

Too many desktops around… another one won’t be a good idea for now! until I sort out a way to manage data on various drives!

there are no free drive bays or expansion slots in this unit, either.

when i first saw the description, it looked better than the emachines i bought at costco over the weekend for thirty bucks more; but that one has open bays and slots, tho’ a smaller HD and an athlon dual core.

however, the 64bit OS makes it a no-go for me. there are (as said earlier) lots of programs and hardware that’ll be useless.

the windows vista compatibility center

has info on what hardware and software is compatible. and it’ll be plenty fast if your stuff works on it . . .

It says 2 HDMI ports on the video card, so I assume those are HDMI out’s.

Does anyone know if the other 2 HDMI on-board are in’s?

Actually, there is a pretty simple hack to have DNS Pro v. 9.5 run in 64 bit Vista; I have it running on an HP laptop that is Vista x64.

PM me if you want details…

I zoomed in on it and it looks as though there’s a built in card reader (one of those 9 in one styles) however that’s all it is, aside from what is said in the description, no firewire. Sorry. :frowning:

I was thinking the same thing. [O.o]

I’m surprised “socialist” wasn’t in there.

You could, but beware of the small power supply. Some high-end video cards require a lot more power than this computer is currently outputting. Also, if you take a look at the “case opened” photo available on the main page, you’ll see that there isn’t much physical space for a monster-size video card.

I wish computers such as this didn’t come with a bunch of pre installed trial versions of software.

It always means extra work getting rid of it later, because for the most part, except maybe microsoft office, it’s not software I really want, so I’m not going to pay for the full version. It just sits there useless.

NO, THIS DOES NOT WORK ON MAC

I bought a new one of these from TigerDirect not too long ago.

Didn’t even boot up. So I had to send it back, and I was out $50 shipping.

Also bought a laptop(Bestbuy) from Acer. Laptop booted up fine, but AC adapter was broken and Bestbuy didn’t have an instore replacement.

Earlier, I had bought another Acer laptop(Newegg) from them as well and the power input came loose, and was out of warranty.

As you can see, I haven’t had a good experience with Acer. I definitely wouldn’t buy again new, much less refurbished.
