Acoustic Research Universal Smart Remote with 2.2” LCD and Wifi

sheesh

Given the costs of the last couple of days of woots and sellout.woots, you’d think they think we’re all getting raises and record bonuses these days. They may have been or are solid woots but who the heck can afford to lavish themselves with $800 3-piece sets of speakers, $250 GPS’s, and $80 tv remotes?

My tax returns are going into the rainy-day funds unless woot can really tickle my fancy.

Bigger storms are a brewin’!

CNET review makes me say thumbs down on this remote. Better remotes for less $ can be found everyday. Here is CNET summary.

We’d recommend the Acoustic Research Universal Smart Remote only if you are really drawn to the idea of having your program guide displayed directly on your remote control. However, the painstaking setup and gimmicky Wi-Fi features hinder the overall experience. If the remote used Wi-Fi for device codes, or was considerably cheaper than the average Harmony, we’d have an easier time recommending it. While Harmony remotes do have their faults, there is currently no replacement for their software counterparts that make setup an overall more pleasant experience

no bluetooth so it cant be used with my ps3 no thanks

If anyone is feeling frivolous, charitable and generous I have a Bday coming real soon in the middle of December.

OMG…its so pretty, look at all the sparkly lights. I can smell the colors, outside on my lawn, the moist green organic that my feet tread upon…and they haven’t listed any WestCoast tour dates yet…looking for a miracle.

good luck finding universal remotes that do have bluetooth.

sony is at fault for that one. you can however get adapters for your ps3.

“the click365 service” in this font almost reads as “the dick365 service”.

But what you’re missing in this review is that they’re comparing it to other remotes in its list price range, not remotes for $80. I took that review as positive.

This is the least clever woot description I’ve read yet. No matter what side of the issue you’re on, it ain’t funny. Let’s make fun of crippled kids next!

Oh, and the remote sucks too.

Here is an interesting review that actually talks a bit about configuring the device.

Rick

I decided to take the plunge. I was about to order one from another site for $126 plus $5 for shipping. I hope it works out- I had a Logitech 550 for less than a week and dropped it. I don’t want to spend a ton of money on the Harmony One, although it probably is the best thing since sliced bread. By the way- anyone familiar with the square trade warranty, and is it worth the trouble?

I wish it had a Mouse Control on the LCD or a Air Mouse, that would have been an awesome remote for me. I own two Vista Media Center PCs and use with Gyration Air Mouse Universal Remote control.

Enough with the Logitech Harmony One! It’s overpriced and overrated. It’s cumbersome to hold, the screen small and hard to read, customization is very limited and the web-based configuration software maddeningly slow and convoluted.
It’s amazing that they seem to have learned nothing from the Philips Pronto. It was released 15 years ago and had its share of flaws, most of them due to the limitations of the technology at the time. Still, it provided practically unlimited flexibility and very easy programmability.
Unfortunately since then Philips has moved its business to the high end and their good programmable remotes are completely unaffordable.
But Logitech Harmony One, the best remote? No effing way. It’s a piece of crap.

I am in. About a year ago I ordered this remote from Amazon for just over $200. I sent it back because I forgot that the Bose equipment I have works on radio signals and not capabale on this remote. However I did get a chance to set up the TV and DVR and it was GREAT! Set up is quite easy and has 1 touch programming for say watching a DVD, it switches the inputs on the TV etc…Only issue I had was it’s limitation due to the Bose 5.1 equipment on that set-up. I now have an LCD large screen and 5.1 set-up with all the addons upsatirs and am looking forward to getting this remote again.

we’ll just have to agree that you’re wrong i guess

Hi. We are in a major recession. Obama’s $800+ billion is going to seal the deal and push us right into the depression after the inflation hits (don’t worry, the hypocrite fucking neo-con republicans would have done the same). Who the hell is going to buy an $85 remote control with an LCD display. And if you did buy one… Maybe you should start stocking up on the necessities and not couch potato bling bling. God save us all!

On the bright side this is 14% cheaper than it will be when another trillion is printed to devalue the 7 trillion in circulation. So Buy now while everything is cheap!

I don’t think so, considering I’m absolutely certain you have zero experience with the Pronto remotes, so you have no point of comparison.
My biggest gripe with the Harmony remotes is that it is built around “activities” and the model completely falls apart if any of your devices doesn’t have discrete codes. Many devices only have on/off toggles, and input selection can also be a fairly major issue.
The Pronto has sufficient flexibility that you can work around these problems elegantly, but the Harmony just doesn’t.
As a disclaimer, I only had 1 year experience with the Harmony 880, which many consider a stellar remote, but it’s garbage in my opinion. The color screen is unreadable, the graphics cannot be customized, text gets truncated unpredictably… The One seems a little better in the screen department, but from what I’ve seen the software is just as bad. Fail.

Good afternoon, brndn84.

Okay, I nearly spit out my tea laughing at this one-liner. Good one!

still laughing

You didn’t trademark this, did you? I want to use it someday.

Good afternoon, djschusta.

Wait, seriously, you’re expecting the men and women in government to do the right thing?

That’s just funny. ROFL

People who driver Hummers, I imagine. The recession doesn’t affect everyone, silly, only the have-nots.

Granted, some of the haves may have to fore-go the third yacht this year. I feel bad for the haves, it must s u c k having to settle for only two yachts.

It’s not necessary, really. The haves eat the have-nots when things get tough. It’s been that way for centuries.

I called God once. I got a ring-no-answer. I guess my fate is up to me. I sure wish I were a have. Oh well, I’ll have to settle for zero yachts.

I appreciate the laugh. It was good.

you obviously must have missed the non-wizard part of the harmony software. and who cares what the graphics are on the screen, as for text learn to not be so verbose - DVD, TV, DVR, BluRay, Radio - those dont get truncated.

oh and I have used both the pronto and the harmony series. Both are very good remotes. But really I nod to the harmony series. Almost no instructions needed to get everything set up and running smoothly.
