Relevant post from January: Aduro Surge Wall Tower Outlet Dual USB
Unless this has been verifiably fixed, this product still seems dangerous to use
Thanks to badraman!
Will Wooten please respond about the safety issue? I would have purchased this but now have grave concern.
Never seen deals on extinguishers just water pitchers
Woot! actually has sales on fire extinguishers quite often. Keep checking. They show up all the time.
I only found that thread from trying to find/Googling any information on if these things had a joules rating in regards to the supposed surge in it’s name which it apparently has none. Whereas you can find plenty of other brands that give you that information readily and easily. I’m certainly no expert but that thread didn’t give me a lot of good feelings about it even being able to survive an actual surge of power let alone that issue that was described in detail in that thread. This thread was on the first page of results if that gives you an idea of how sparse my search results were using the product title as search terms.
The one that showed up in the last few weeks even had an extra discount if u were Amazon Prime’d up!
Interesting reading about these being a potential “fire hazard” because the one I bought 2 years ago here on Woot! performed perfectly. It comes in handy when every bedroom outlet is behind a dresser or nightstand and you don’t want to crush the cords being that most cords aren’t the 90° angle style. By using the side outlets I can push my nightstand or dresser as close to the wall or literally against this wall tower outlet without worrying about the cords getting smashed.
I just took two minutes to check the ones I ordered a few months ago and djsteve (in the earlier thread) is absolutely correct in his posting from back then. These are not wired correctly and present a real safety hazard. It shouldn’t take Woot and Amazon over three months to check what just took me two minutes to verify. Amazon/Woot needs to recall these defective and unsafe units immediately.
I will be filling a complaint with the CPSC and informing Consumer Reports about this.
A clue that this company doesn’t know what they’re doing is that that the packaging misspells “Joule” everywhere it appears. Given that Joule is an eponym, this cannot be ascribed to a language issue or error in translation.
Ya just to repost the image @djsteve1 notated:
And this post from @blaineg is funny still:
" Well, they are being honest about it:
“Aduro” means “Burn” in Latin don’tchaknow. But it’s also Latin for “consume in fire”"
I just filed a complete and fully documented complaint with the CPSC.
Is this the brand woot keeps selling that has “surge” in the name but doesn’t actually offer any surge protection in the device…?
I got mine and sure enough half of the outlets were wired with the small side as Hot (Line) and the larger side as Neutral; this is the correct way. The other half were wired incorrectly. In a polarized plug the neutral needs to be connected to neutral because because it is supposed to be a return for the current coming from the Hot (Line) side and in some cases is connected to Ground. When this is reversed, a common or Grounded outer case of an object can become a source of current due to it not being a ground at all, but instead an energized source just waiting for someone to touch both at the same time. Case in point, touch the fridge and the sink and the same time, 15A across the heart; approx 14.95A more than necessary but the same result.
UPDATE: Today I received this email from the CPSC:
"On Wednesday, July 28, 2021, the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission sent your Report No. 20210626-2CCE0-2147363275 to the manufacturer or private labeler of the consumer product described in your Report. If you consented to give your contact information to the manufacturer or private labeler, that information was also provided.
What can a manufacturer ask me about my Report?
If the manufacturer or private labeler has your contact information, they may contact you to verify the information in your Report. A manufacturer or private labeler cannot use or disseminate your contact information for any purpose other than to verify the information in your Report. A manufacturer or private labeler may not use contact information received from the CPSC for activities such as sales, promotion, warranty, or any other commercial purpose. This requirement does not prevent you from contacting a manufacturer or private labeler for any purpose or from seeking a resolution from the manufacturer or private labeler, if you so desire."
I’m not sure if they do anything beyond letting the manufacturer know there’s been a complaint. I sure hope this isn’t all there is to it.
I will report if I hear anything from the manufacturer about this – so far, I have heard NOTHING from Woot about recalling these dangerous and defective units.
