Alexa-Enabled Ora Wi-Fi Mini Smart Plug

Yes. I use these. They work fine with Alexa…she’s even dating one of them. The iApp I use is called TuyaSmart. I think there is an android app of the same name. That was an excellent suggestion to enable and use your guest network for all such devices.

That is a very smart and useful idea. Thank you for that.

Per the vendor: The smart plug works with the following App:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.xenon.jinvoo&hl=en

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/jinvoo-smart/id1182632835?mt=8

It is also compatible with Amazon Alexa.

It does not work with IFTTT.

i suggest these instead because they work with IFTTT but not the same form factor. https://www.amazon.com/Quirky-PPVG-WH01-Pivot-Power-Genius/dp/B00GN92MC6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1496683959&sr=8-1&keywords=quirky

i have a bunch and they work great. can be annoying to set them up, but it’s not too bad.

Thanks… that sounds like an excellent idea to separate the IoT devices from PCs, servers, etc.

But do Ora devices have adequate security so that they cannot be taken over by somebody in the outside world? (more “it is very difficult to” rather than “cannot”, I suppose) If they are easily hacked you could still get somebody screwing with your devices and the equipment plugged into them.

All receptacles are.

Did I miss where the power ratings were? Seems like plugging in an air compressor to one of these could be iffy, given the huge current draw a compressor motor usually pulls when it starts up. But it also seems like you’ve got a resistive load (towel heater) plugged into one of these, which I always thought was a no-no (plugging a resistive load like a space heater, towel heater, etc. any way but directly into an outlet with no extension cord or power strip, etc.).

I’ll be watching for the reply of our EE friends. Certainly don’t want to risk a fire.
For further disclosure, the compressor is the small 3 gallon, 1 HP, $99 Craftsman model which I’m guessing draws little current. Never had a WeMo switch go bad or trip a breaker. Incidentally, they advertise the WeMo switch with flat irons/curling irons plugged into them.

The working output is 10A Max
It also has an overload protection circuit.
