Is this the current version?

Per the specs tab:
“Model: Amazon Fire HD 6; 2014 (Ariel)”
I’m assuming 2014 is the year.

[MOD edit: That is correct, 2014 is the year for these]

I have 3 of these - 1 for me and 1 for the wife plus a spare “floater” for the kids.

They are awesome - just the perfect size for 1 handed use and make a great device to have with you while you are watching TV and want to look something up (like what movies has this actor been in in before, where is my team in the league, what happened to that player…). I have 6 tablets in total and this one gets the most use of all. The screen is gorgeous and it is really fast.

The only thing keeping it from being perfect is the lack of an external SD card.

Seriously - you will totally get your money’s worth out of this unit.

Will this run Fallout Shelter?

Can this version of the Fire tablet do display mirroring? I have a Fire TV stick and want to put chord sheets from the tablet to a larger display on my TV.

This is totally worth it. Seriously a solid tablet, HD video, small enough to throw in your purse or pocket. I have one and love it. This price is kind of a steal

I wooted one of these many months ago. I loved it and used it often. One day I was reading then turned it off with it plugged into the charger. The next day it never turned on again. I harnessed the power of the internet in an attempt to fix the issue to no avail. I wound up throwing it on the heap of electronic waste I need to haul away one day.

Then I went to Amazon and purchased a new one and got the extended warranty.

Do these come “with offers”?
I got the newest one as new before Christmas for $39. They are kind of slow but well worth the price. I hate mini-usb connectors though. If you fall asleep reading with it plugged in you end up bending things and then you can’t charge them reliably.

Don’t plan on buying one of these and using it with Free Time. The amount of memory on these is way too little. I have two of these for my kids and I am constantly in the battle of what apps need to be uninstalled so they can run new content. Spend a couple of extra dollars and get the newer ones that you can put the SD card in.

BTW, there are easy instructions for getting Google Play Store onto a Fire 6 (or 7) without having to root it. Google it. Here’s a good reference:

So does that mean you have to do that before you can run android apps on it?

No. If you have access to any other Android device, you can retrieve the apk file from that device (e.g., by using something like ES File Explorer to create a backup of the installed app). Copy that file to the Kindle tablet and install it and it will run just fine.

The exception to this is anything that makes use of Google services that are not part of the Open Source Android project, most notably the Google location/mapping services.

Bought one of the 8GB units in the pre-Xmas wootoff. Gave it full charge, unplugged it before bed. Next night, without any usage, battery was down to 42%. Didn’t think anything of it because i had kicked off an update before going to bed and thought maybe that sucked it dry.

Next day, repeated the process. Fully charged it, unplugged and 24 hours later with no use the battery was down to 46%.

I should open a case with Amazon to see if i’ve got one with a bad battery.

LOL! Woot can’t even give these away.

If you install the google play store on these one of the google play processes will run at 100% draining your battery, making the thing hot, and slow everything else down.

I have the 7" models and feel those are better because of the external SD slot. Also have installed Google Play services on them and works perfectly.

thought about getting a 6" model but no SD card slot is a deal breaker
