Anyone know how these are in comparison to the Fire HD8 (7th Gen) Tablets? Should I just save the money and go with the cheaper HD8 if I plan to use for daily reading and the rare airplane movie?

and

for comparisons of the best ever HDX vs the newer and very capable HD8

So far as I know the X part only means it has the Mayday button. I’m happy with mine that I’ve had since they first came out. I don’t have anything to compare it to but the Mayday feature has bailed me out a couple of times.

Will you use the other Android stuff? Perhaps a plain Kindle might be nice. They were $19 here and included text to speech.

H E L P !!! Hi. I have and old,and a new Fire. I’ve purchased a few a gifts. However, I’m still very disatisfied cause I never get to use them the way I want. I’m told it’s because they don’t have wifi but when I looked into it, it became too confusing and expensive - so, what is the diff. between yours and a comparable ipad? Can I travel and still read the books, etc., I want to read? Get and send email, etc. etc. etc. If this machine won’t do what I need - what will?

I have one of these that I bought new several years ago. As far as I know Amazon quit making the HDX. It has a “retina” display that is sharper than the Fire HDs that were available at the time. Since then they have focused on reducing price to give away the Fire tablets in order to get people into the ecosystem. The stereo sound is superior to iPads.

Much better tablets for the same price or cheaper but I guess if your a Amazon nut and do everything Amazon go for it.

Do these include “Special Offers”?

OS not upgradeable to latest

I have one of these I bought at full price right before Amazon stopped making nice tablets. It’s better than any of the Amazon tablets available now, so if you want the best Fire you can get, this is the one. Only downside I noticed with mine is the WiFi isn’t as strong as my HD 6 and my Verizon data connection would sometimes just stop working and I’d need to restart the Fire. The screen is beautiful and it still plays games like a champ.

Still incredibly surprising that by this generation they still didn’t include an SD slot. I understand on iOS systems, but not Android (based) systems.

I bought an earlier version for $39.95, on sale for $20.00 less. It was worth what I paid for, but not much more. It’s handy when my phone is charging, or for whatever what reason…

I have had my Amazon Fire HDX 8.9" for a few years now, and I still think it’s the best tablet they ever made. We will not see the likes of it again because Amazon has chosen to go in the direction of quantity over quality, and cheap tablets over more expensive ones. This has an amazing screen, and watching Amazon video content on it is fantastic. I’m seriously consider buying one of these simply because mine is getting a bit long in tooth, and I would hate to do without it. If you’re on the fence, you will never find a better display for this much money.

Why won’t Woot or Amazon ship these Fire HDX tablets to an address in Canada? I want to buy two of these but the order keeps getting rejected until an address in the U.S. is provided.

Whoever told you that they don’t have wifi was incorrect. All of the Amazon tablets have wifi. You’ll have to be more specific about what you want to do that you’re not able to do before anyone can help you.

The Fire tablets will all let you travel and read books, send email, etc., etc., etc. And the HDX, in particular, can easily go toe to toe with the iPad.

The biggest differences are a) price, b) where your content is, and c) their respective app stores. If you have everything in the Apple app store, iTunes, and the like, if your digital music, apps, books, videos, were all purchased from Apple, then you most likely want an iPad. If your content was purchased from Amazon, then a Fire tablet may be what you’re looking for.

If you’re a member of Amazon Prime, then you have access to over a million free songs, plus tens of thousands of free videos, and free storage that goes along with the Fire tablet. If you’re not, then it’s not quite as compelling a deal.

The Apple app store has far more content than Amazon’s store does, and it’s not even close. If there are specific apps you need, you’ll need to see if they’re available on Amazon. And if not, then the iPad may be what you want.

If all you want a tablet for is reading, playing games, watching an occasional video, sending and receiving email, then the Amazon tablets are a great choice, and this HDX was the best tablet Amazon ever made – lightweight, with a great screen and great sound.

Not quite. The “X” meant that it was top of the line, with screen quality/resolution, sound, weight, battery life, processor speed, etc., all premium.

And yes, the “X” line included Mayday, where the regular did not.

That’s what it says:

In the box: Amazon Fire HDX 8.9" Tablet (Includes Special Offers)

However, the last time these were up for sale, that’s what they said then, as well, and it turns out that the one they shipped me did not include special offers. If you don’t like them, you can easily get rid of them by paying $20.

You’re wrong. I have two, a third generation and a fourth. Both have been updated without problems. It is the earliest Fires that can not be updated.
