Is the LTE free like the Amazon Whispernet or do you need a third-party phone service/SIM? If so what’s the cheapest available for a reasonable amount of web browsing and a few youtube videos? (but not major movie downloading)

No, it’s through AT&T and you’d need to set up account with them.

Damn it, price dropped $10 since I bought from Woot last month. Grr.

Suppose you don’t want to use 4G and just want to use Wi-Fi, can you get by without 4G?. I have a Verizon for cell phone service.

Thanks!

Mike

Is it a special account specifically for Kindles, or a generic data-only account, or is it a standard account that would let you use voice if the device supported it? Is the device hard-wired to ATT or is it an exchangable SIM? If it’s hard wired can it be unlocked like a cell phone bought from ATT?

If you just want to use it as a Wi-Fi device, can you? Or are you forced to get on a cell network?

Thanks!

Mike

Why wouldnt I buy the latest and greatest Fire HD 8 for $89 instead of this?

Absolutely. Wi-Fi only is fine.

Those would be questions for Amazon, I think. It is not unlocked. It is set up for the AT&T network. You would have a data account with them.

64 GB of memory vs 16 GB, I’m guessing.

I have an old ASUS Windows RT tablet. It loads websites really slow. I only use it for web surfing, checking email and simple task. I’ve been wanting to replace it with either an Android tablet or an Amazon Fire tablet. Is web surfing smooth on the Fire tablet?

Maybe yes maybe no

This 8.9 on sale form Woot is second generation, to my understanding, which would make it 2nd generation. And there are 2 more generations of the 8.9, correct?

because it’s only 16gh internal storage and it doesn’t have AT&T cellular capability. is the main reason I would say.

Can you make phone calls with this? Are they locked? Maybe someone from woot can answer this.

We have two 2nd gen HD 8.9" in our house…the issue with these devices now is that we cannot get the latest OS and as such cannot get the most recent apps. Given that the Amazon app store already is a subset of the other major players’ app stores, your app selection on this device is even more limited than the newer models.

The one feature of this device that the other Fire models does not have is the HDMI out port.

This will not work on Verizon’s network?

I just bought the smaller 7" version. The size is deceptive - there’s an insanely thick border on these. The actual viewing size of mine is probably close to the size of my iPhone 7+ viewing area, especially when you think about widescreen formats.

I really only bought it so that I could use it with my firestick to add a TV to my bedroom without needing a new STB (love Xfinity for that reason) and not really to use as a tablet.

Look at the border - you’re giving up half your viewing area.
