I’m looking at the Kindle Scribe. My husband is almost deaf and I’m looking for a way to communicate with him without his hearing aids. I wanted the Kindle for myself and then I saw this. My question is is if I don’t have a relationship with Amazon for whatever reason then will I lose the books that I have on my Kindle and will the Kindle cease to operate?
$300 is a lot for us on a fixed income so it’s quite an investment. If you have one or have any feedback I would truly appreciate it. Hearing aids even though they are more affordable for the mile to moderate hearing loss they are still thousands of dollars for those with profound hearing loss.

you have to have a free Amazon account (not Prime) to really use a Kindle. If you purchase books through Amazon on the Kindle, they’re yours for good as long as you’re signed in.
Im sorry i cant help with regards to the kindle question, but wanted to poitn out the FDA has opened up the hearing aid market with over the counter options for as little as a hundred or two dollars. Just an fyi if you havent looked at options recently. Best wishes
Confirming @cverl996’s comments on keeping books without Prime. I have another Amazon account where I cancelled Prime and my very old Kindle keyboard still has the books I purchased. You at least need an account with Amazon and be logged into it on the device.
As someone who is also losing my hearing and was raised in a deaf household, I would think an inexpensive tablet might serve your needs just as well. You can download any variety of note-taking apps to essentially get a “whiteboard” to write on for communication if that’s the goal, I would just look for tablets that support a stylus if that would assist in easier writing rather than using your finger. And a tablet would probably more easily support communication apps for instant messaging.
I have one of these e-ink writing tablets, from a different manufacturer, that I use for work regularly. However I think for your purposes something like this might be more than what you need, at least cost-wise.
One of the benefits to these kind of e-ink tablets is that you can mark up PDFs and output the notes you take to a PDF. However, if you don’t have that need, I think a note taking app on a regular tablet is probably more efficient.
Also, if it’s a little better for the wallet, Target has a version of the Scribe on sale for $220 for the 16gb model. The only difference I can see is that it comes with something called the basic pen, instead of the “Pro” pen Woot’s model comes with:

There are better, non-Amazon options if you don’t have or want to maintain an account. You’d be better off with a Kobo, BOOX, or reMarkable tablet.
Im not familiar with Kobo’s writing tablet line, but I have a couple BOOX models and except for the newest BOOX Go models, they tend to be more expensive than this item and regular android tablets, depending on the model.
I personally don’t recommend reMarkable since its a proprietary operating system (BOOX uses Android OS) and after they imposed subscription fees for services they once offered for free. Maybe they walked that back, but I find that behavior aggressively anti-customer.

Everyone else means well, but you do NOT have to have an Amazon account to use a kindle. You can connect your kindle to a computer via USB and load ebooks on it through your computer either by just dragging-and-dropping them into the kindle’s directory or, a better option, by using a program called calibre. Calibre is a free, open-source, multi-platform ebook library that will convert ebooks to the correct format for kindles and transfer them seamlessly. You can get ebooks from many sources, not just Amazon.
We have several kindles and at least two of them are not now, have never been and never will be online nor are then now, nor have the ever been members of the communist Amazon party.

Thank you I truly appreciate your response. Unfortunately every hearing aid company that I have reached out to from the standards to the new ones such as Bose the Costco company, Walmart etc they are only made for people with mild to moderate hearing loss.

Thank you so much for your response. I am going to order one and see if we can figure out how to use this. I’m going to also check out the platform that you suggested. I prefer not to have this on the Amazon because it makes things more difficult for my husband. He has some dementia issues and the simpler I can keep things the easier it is for us to communicate.
