Will Apple allow you to purchase Apple Care for these?
No. But this is not a deal. It costs as much as Apple Refurbished which comes with 1 year warranty from Apple, and is qualified for Apple Care purchase.
Also refurbished items from Apple is as good as new item. I think that alone is better than the open box condition of this laptop.
