I’m curious how you visually tell the difference between a Thunderbolt 4 and Thunderbolt 5 cable. ![]()
Apple Thunderbolt 4 (USB‑C) Pro Cable - $35.99 - Free shipping for Prime members Apple Thunderbolt 4 (USB‑C) Pro Cable
The price ![]()
Considering the data transfer speeds the price is actually not that bad.
I bought and received some of these cables. They seem to be the Apple Thunderbolt 4 cable, not the Thunderbolt 5 cable.
Compared these to a 1 meter TB4 and TB5 cable purchased from Apple, and these cables match the TB4 cable more than the TB5 cable. Mostly the cable grips are shorter compared to the actual TB5 cable. These cables from woot also lack any embossing/text on the cable connector; no model number, serial number, or made in text is present.
Similar experience here
I bought 9 cables total (wanted to stock up on presumably high-quality actually certified TB5 cables), and none of them have the laser engraved 5 on them, and 8 of them were marked A2804 (3.3m TB4 Pro cables). The 9th has no markings whatsoever.
Furthermore, 2 of the S/N ones have wear, one of them having quite substantial wear for what is an ostensibly “new” cable.
A2804 is what’s on the connector of my 1 m TB4 cable bought off Woot a couple of months ago (generic package, MU883AM/A; Mothership link). Connector length looks shorter than Apple’s current 1.8 m Thunderbolt 4 Pro cable illustration.
Marking of mine is different from what this teardown looks like, so
.
FYI, in the past when I ordered MagSafe 3 cables from Woot (bulk packaging), I got something marked EVT. I thought that was suspicious and returned it. Then the Reddit Mob informed me that EVT is “Engineering Validation Test” a marking for cables used internally at Apple. Rare (I was told) collectibles (I was told), and someone offered me $50 for one (twice Woot’s charge.)
I ordered another.
I don’t recall if it was sold as “New” or “New Old Stock” or “Open Box.” But otherwise in excellent condition. YMMV, but I would expect anything in “bulk packaging” to have been through something other than manufacturing right into the new, retail package. Light use, testing, used for photos,… per Woot’s “open box” definition.
I ordered a 3 Pack, and all received cables are used (worn connectors, black metal is chipped), and none of them have the [5] engraving characteristic of Apple’s TB5 cables. Had a similar experience buying 2 used ‘like new’ TB5 cables from Woot which were ironically in better condition but also not actual Apple TB5 cables. It looks like this whole listing and Woot’s classification system for these is a scam.
The largest issue for me is that none of the 9 cables I received seemed to be TB5 cables.
Edit: after confirming that the TB5 cables are supposed to have metal overmold on the connectors, and these have plastic, just going to return personally.
Beware! I received a model A2804, which is TB4 not TB5, like others - guessing this is a bad supplier issue. Initiating a return.
Me too! A2804. Two different cable testers further read the e-marker as TBT3 40Gbs (Treedix and Power-Z KM003C.)
I saw these comments after making the purchase. A wrong tracking number was attached to my order. I even didn’t receive the cable. Requesting a refund…..

Me too. Mine came in a package labeled TB5 but is TB4 A2804 engraved and emarker 20v 5a
Wonder if anyone got a TB5 or if their entire batch is bad. (Asked if they could replace with auth TB5 cable)
Just received mine. As others stated they looked used with scratches on the metal parts. Also they check out only as TB3 cables with 100W max charging. TB5 should support 240w charging and 80GBPS data. Will initiate return. What a ripoff woot became.
