is this a pc pretending to be a mac? 8gb ram is a joke
A joke perhaps, but with this ASUS at least you can add/swap memory without using a soldering iron and voiding your warranty, same with SSD…
Might I be able to put a low end graphics card in one of the PCI slots? I don’t do modern gaming (of the Duke Nukem, Diablo, Civilization era!), but I do spend some time working with photos and have a bad habit of having many dozens of browser tabs open! Thanks.
I would NOT count on it. These are Asus’ business class desktops and efficiency is the greater goal. That means a low profile case, limited space at the expansion slots, a power supply that’s 12V only design, and not much extra wattage to spare.
(Note that I am not staff. I just volunteer to help out on the forums.)
Thanks. My finger is itching to push buy on this. I used to build desktops for family and friends, from the 80’s to about 13 years ago when I suffered a spinal injury. It also began to become harder to do a build more economically than what was commercially available. Anyway, I was hoping that I could throw in 32G of RAM, a 4TB and some older, low end graphics card and have a better setup than my current old Dell laptop.
I’m not 100% sure, but I think it should be doable.
Looking into the case on Asus’s website suggests it has [a P.C.I.E. 4.0 x16 slot with a 300 watt power supply](https://shop.asus.com/us/90pf0391-m008s0-expertcenter-d5-sff-d500sd.html?srsltid=AfmBOoorXvd0Zt165ZKvHftk4cYErEzqJ3B6G82WqsQ8kfY89964Dy5SNts If this is the case, then it has half height P.C.I.E. cutouts.
That restricts your options considerably, but I reckon it can be done. I’d consider sticking an RTX 3050 6gb in there. Nvidia’s website recommends a 300 watt minimum for that card if you view the full spec. sheet, and it is available in low profile variants.
Here’s one made by Asus on the mothership website if you want to brand match, although I’d recommend buying the M.S.I. one.
The 6 gig. version should be able to be powered completely off the slot. Doesn’t have an external P.C.I.E. connector.
You also have to keep in mind that integrated graphics has advanced considerably though over the years, so i wouldn’t necessarily be looking to add too low end of a card. The GT 1030 isn’t much if any better than Vega integrated graphics.
yes you can, you have a few options. Since this is has a gen 4 pciex16 slot you can use a low profile rx6400 4gb which will do ok and no need for external power connector. You might also find a low profile 3050 6g that doesn’t need external power. Of all the crap office deals they offer here this is actually not a bad deal. Slap in one of the cards above and upgrade to 32gb of RAM.
Started in the 8088 days myself when dual floppies was a huge upgrade. Overclocking a 286 by desoldering the crystal oscillator and swapping in a different one, jumpers and dipswitches galore. Getting excited because an 80 megabyte hard drive was finally under $1000 – MFM controller sold separately. Juggling the order of drivers in config.sys so peripherals would play with one another and not take the IRQ or DMA of another device.
I. Do. Not. Miss. Those. Days.
Thanks. Of course it sold out while I was vacillating! The story of my life…
Wow, nice to meet someone with shared experiences! CPM on a 10" floppy, Tandy Heathkit anyone?! It was cool to be able to run to Radio Shack then for whatever hardware minutia that we needed like we run to Lowe’s for home stuff now!
Awwww RADIO SHACK WAS THE BEST. I would look at the wall of transistors and junk as a kid and dream of making robots.
