Among my favorite memories as a kid are the countless times I bought soft pretzels from a street vendor in downtown Philadelphia. I can remember them being just a nickel. That was before anyone worried about the wooden cart, the gigantic jar of mustard with the oversized tongue depressor-like spreader, and the vendor’s money-exchanging hands serving as a huge petri dish for all involved. To this day, I credit those times for my cast iron constitution.

I remember coming home from school, grabbing a pretzel out of the freezer, running it for a second under the tap, covering it in rock salt and then putting it in the microwave. Then I’d go turn on the TV, watch some Oprah and get started on my homework before my mom got home from work. Good old days!

There’s a local restaurant called McGuire’s. They sell a ridiculously large pretzel - so large that it hangs from a metal frame. I call it ‘the pretzel that ate Pensacola.’
