Great design! The spider web, the tee shirt text, just perfect.
Wow, this really takes me back. My dad was a gearhead when he was a teenager (he owned – and wrecked – a 1970 Yenko Deuce Nova when I was a toddler; I don’t remember it but he still has pictures of it). He had a subscription to CARtoons, a magazine from Petersen Publishing (the same Petersen as the auto museum in L.A., and the publishers of Car Craft, Hot Rod, Motor Trend, etc.) for several years at the end of its run.
CARtoons was, well, cartoons about cars, but more than that, it was about the intense car subcultures – from the California-based “Kustom Kulture” represented by every issue’s lead “Krass and Bernie” strip, to off-roading, drag racing, stock-car racing, etc. Big Daddy Roth’s Rat Fink showed up a lot.
I was a geek, not a gearhead, but somehow CARtoons struck my fancy just right, and I think I looked forward to each issue more than my dad did. George Trosley, Shawn Kerri, Dennis Ellefson…
Thanks for a trip (or, as may be, a drag-race) down memory lane, ApeLad.
Expected this to place. Great illustration. Congrats.
Nice colour
CarToons came back last year actually. The rights were purchased by a guy from Canada. https://www.cartoonsmag.com/ A few of the old guys returned as well including Trosley. Unfortunately the Krass and Bernie IP is owned by Hot Rod Magazine now so they don’t appear.
For the life of me I can’t tell what this is a reference to.
I know the original is some kind of crazy flaming skull driving the buggy.
Just do a quick search in your favorite search engine for “rat fink hot rod” and you’ll see
Oh, and I’d guess something to do with that Zootopia movie as well
Love Ed Roth’s stuff… and this is a great play on it. Nice work!
Thanks everybody!
Yeah, this is a reference to Ed “Big Daddy” Roth’s amazing designs. Google him if you’re not familiar.
And, yeah omkensey76, I loved CARtoons also. I was going for the iron-on look, like they’d sometimes include with the magazine (if I remember correctly).
Ha! I’d forgotten about the iron-ons!
