I don’t own this particular machine but I do own 2 other brother sewing machines, a brother serger, and a brother embroidery machine. Their stuff is well made and a great value for the price. If you need a basic, workhorse sewing machine I don’t think you’ll go wrong with this.

This one is new condition, not refurb 
Brother sewing machines are good, but this one doesn’t have an adjustable stitch length and a small throat (the place to the right of the needle for your work to hold extra fabric.) If you are starting and don’t want to be out much to begin with or just have something for small repairs, then grab this while you can.
No variable stitch length? Hrm. I constantly adjust the stitch length on my existing machine. (Which doesn’t have the free arm for cuffs.) Not sure how I feel about that…but hemming cuffs is a real PITA on my current machine, which was given to me used at least 10 years ago.
There are 6 straight stitches in various lengths with 3 zigzag stitches.
