Just where exactly is the Bulleen Estate? Can it be visited? “Estate” used to actually mean
something, apparently no longer. Pass.
If you read the info under the Winery tab, you quickly realize that AW Direct wines, as guided by Bruce Cunningham, are all about marketing and sales. That is his background, not winemaking. Lots of one-off wines with mystery origins and names with terms like “estate” and “reserve” thrown in because they sound legit.
I’m sure some of the wines are decent for the price but I much prefer offers from the boutique wineries that were what wine.woot was all about in the beginning.
Agree, and WD needs to make a living as well; hence we need to tolerate some chaff. A diamond once a week was much easier to accomplish, and even then, there was some CZ mixed in.

Also agree, but think using word “Estate” on label is misleading (or outright lying) and should be illegal. My line/bar is that if the “winery” doesn’t at least have a website, I keep my money. Too high horse? Oh well, there’s too much good stuff coming from reputable, legit producers than have to buy from posers applying lipstick…
Good point. I can’t imagine how hard it would be to line up wine offers from 6 different small wineries every single week on top of the non-wine Thursday offer and the handful of ongoing Plus deals.
By working with companies like AW Direct, Precept, et.al. he can keep the wine deals and profits flowing. But unlike AW Direct, Precept represents a collection of otherwise small producers and is a much more desirable partner.
Hopefully WD can find more partners like Precept or Don & Sons (where have they been lately?) to help the fill-in offers be almost as good as the weekly highlights. Kind of like the difference between a music album with one or two good songs vs. an entire album of good songs.
Who’s Next is definitely preferable to Who Let the Dogs Out?.

Seems to be more chaff these days though. A few regulars, too regular, and everything else one off labels from the bulk guys or juice from tankers from wherever. I don’t do summer shipping and that being said my last purchase was last January. From a regular.
