Be careful where you get the lenses from. Sometimes cheaper prices are grey market and Canon won’t honor the warranty because it wasn’t sold from an authorized reseller. The listing on Woot looks good, but the Amazon links are probably not.
That being said, I have this lens (got it refurb from B&H Photo), and I absolutely love it. It is on my camera 90% of the time.
FWIW, MSRP on Canon’s site is only $1k, not $1200.
This is a terrific lens, for both full frame and Dx frame SLRs. I’ve also used it on sony mounts. I bought it six years ago when it was the kit lens for the Canon 5D MkII. Sold the camera a year later, but kept the lens.
A big difference between this larger heftier lens and the lenses normally packaged with cameras, is that the f4 is constant throgh the zoom range.
But it is a large lens, and if you don’t need a full frame lens on your you won’t get the benefit of the extra bulk. It’s very wide at full frame, but only slightly wide with dx/super 35 frames.
I bought this lens back in 2006 to go with my 5D. Back then the price was 1200. Seeing the list price dropped to 999 on the canon site and seeing it here on woot makes me think this lens is due for a refresh soon and they are clearing out old stock. The amazon offers are for lenses that were part of a lens body kit. Don’t know how the warranty works in that case. It’s a great lens, I use it all the time, currently with a 6D.
I agree with the others that this is a great lens. I use it all the time on my T5i, and it takes nice sharp pictures. It is a bit bulky, but not so big as to not fit in any of the camera bags I use frequently.
Why do you do this to me woot? I’m not supposed to be spending money but I’ve had my eye on this or the 24-70mm L lens for a while. Even if they do upgrade the lens, which I do expect sometime soon, this version would be just fine for me. Fine, gimme!
