I got the ZR800 r-e-furb here a few months ago. It’s fine. This 850 is better in every way, particularly better picture resolution and better low light sensitivity (this has a different sensor). Good deal and new. If I didn’t have the 800 I would buy this.

The 900 series and the ZR950 are the current models. There’s no significant difference as far as I know, except a higher price.

BTW I noted on that community page at the time that the ZR800 I received appeared to be brand new, just not fully retail packaged but in a more generic box. The 800 series was replaced by the 900 series. Maybe Canon gave up the charade and are just letting these out to woot new and fully packaged.

I use minidv. I like the ability of tossing in a tape that only takes 5 seconds instead of 45-60 to read, like a dvd disc does. (Unless I format the disc, then it’s only 25 seconds). Of course, a DVD camcorder usually costs 2-3 times as much and this is new, not refurbed.

I agree that this is better than the ZR800 (which I also bought from woot refurbed a couple months ago).

I just bought this one (I like the SD Card port to record from). I already have a dozen to use in my cameras, so it’s cheaper than using the mini dv tapes. I know I can sell the '800 for $110 or more locally.

Does anyone know if this can take an external mic?

MiniDV is the preferred format for those who want to edit their own data.

It won’t. That’s the one feature the ZR800 has that this does not.

Avoid that place. Do not believe that price. See:

Your math and spelling stinks.

Anyone own one of these? A lot of the reviews complain about the internal mic picking up a loud annoying hum from the camera motor. Is it really that bad? That’s the only thing keeping me from pulling the trigger on this.
