I’d had a problem reading the recipe on the label for the rock and rye and reached out to the Carlton Cocktail Co. Got an absolutely fantastic response to my request for not only the directions for creating the rock and rye but my inquiry on creative ways to utilize the root beer bitters in this kit. See below.

Hi!

Those labels wear terribly - we are going to change the directions to be INSIDE the jar so this doesn’t happen. In the mean time, this should help (I’ve modified this a bit to make it easier):
Step 1: Open stay fresh packages and add all ingredients to jar except the tea bag (keep the tea bag intact - put it in the jar as is, but not until Step 4).
Step 2: Add 750 ml high proof rye whiskey, the higher the proof (90 or better), the better the infusion. Shake to dissolve sugar, let infuse for 1 day and test flavor. If more infusion is desired, let sit shaking often, for up to 7 days.
Step 3: Strain through cheesecloth to remove large bits.
Step 4: Add teabag, let sit for as little as 2 hrs or as many as 10 (taste often, remove the bag when infusion tastes great to you). This will impart an anise-like flavor that can overwhelm the complexity - be careful!
Step 5: Decant into a storage bottle & enjoy responsibly. Recipes for cocktails at www.carltoncocktail.com

As for the Root Beer bitters, try these:

Honey Do Old Fashioned
2 oz bourbon
¼ oz honey syrup*
1 dash Peychaud’s bitters
1 dash Root Beer bitters

Put 1 dash of Peychaud’s bitters into an old fashioned glass and add the honey syrup and bourbon. Stir to taste with ice, pour into a separate old fashioned glass over 3 ice cubes and garnish with Root Beer bitters (do not stir).

  • The honey syrup is 2 parts honey: 1 part water, boiled until slightly thickened.

Chugga Lugga
2 oz gin or vodka
1 oz RoJ cherry shrub
soda water
Dash of Root Beer Bitters
4 to 5 preserved cherries

  1. Fill a wide rocks glass with ice.
  2. Add the gin or vodka and the shrub, and stir to mix.
  3. Top with a splash of soda water, dash of bitters and garnish with the cherries.

Strawberry Fields
A tangy vinegar base makes shrubs (aka fruity vinegar syrups) adding a level of brightness uniquely…… well, shruby. In this swizzle, we pair a fresh strawberry shrub with a zesty ginger beer and aged rum for a firecracker of a sipper.

1 1/2 oz. aged rum
1/2 oz. fresh lime juice
1/2 oz. strawberry shrub
3/4 oz. ginger beer
Shaved ice (or crushed)
Garnish: 3 dashes Root Beer bitters, lime wedge

Combine rum, lime juice and strawberry shrub in a tall glass. Top with shaved ice and ginger beer, then swizzle until the drink is well chilled. Garnish with bitters and a lime wedge.

Blind Faith
1 oz Gin
½ oz Amaretto
1 dash Aromatic or Root Beer bitters
1 dash lime juice

Throw some ice cubes in the sniffer glass. Dash Angostura and Lime juice on top. Pour in your favorite gin and your favorite almond liqueur (amaretto). Garnish with some Maraschino cherries and enjoy!

Happy Flapper
1 oz rum
1 oz herbal vermouth (like Ransom)
3-4 dashes Aromatic or Root Beer bitters

Build this one in a glass. Add ingredients to an ice filled highball, add bitters last. Stir it up!

Manhattan or Dry Manhattan
3 oz rye whiskey
1 oz sweet or dry vermouth
2-4 dashes of Aromatic or Root Beer bitters

Stir over ice & strain into chilled cocktail glass, serve neat.

Bourbon Old Fashioned
2 oz bourbon
4 dashes Aromatic or Root Beer bitters
1 tsp sugar
Orange wheel
Amarena cherry
Splash of club soda

In an old fashioned glass muddle the bitters, sugar, orange wheel, cherry and a splash of soda. Remove the orange rind, add the bourbon and fill with ice. Garnish with a fresh orange wheel and cherry.
