People who work in AIDS generally consciously choose to work in AIDS – often with a pay cut. My salary was slashed by 30% (compared to my my past positions in Neurology) as was my girlfriend’s. HIV is no longer the glamorous field it once was and funding is low. In fact, my grant may not be renewed. Yet we enjoy our work. To work in AIDS, you;d have to enjoy interacting with what the NY Times call, “people on the fringes of society.” Most of my patients are gay or IV drug users, and many have become my friends. I also interact with prostitutes and transsexuals, etc. We don’t judge; we just accept. Once you alienate a group of people, you run out of subjects for the studies… I’ve written published articles on this but I won’t bore Woot with it. Enough said.

pubmed articles? nytimes articles? how do you go from neurology to aids research? I’d be interested to read the articles.

and I understand the necessity to deal with patients who have diseases.
