I bought one of these a few months ago and surprisingly use it all the time. Its awesome, and absurdly easy to make icecream and other things. Generally the recipes are:
1.5 cups heavy cream
1.5 cups lighter milk (I use half and half, why bother making “lite”?)
1 cup sugar
ANYTHING YOU WANT TO FLAVOR IT!
After combining ingredients you do want to follow the step of popping the bowl in the freezer for like 20 minutes prior to running it in the maker. Otherwise you tend to get water crystals.
I own one of these and use it all the time. If you have room, I recommend that you keep the freezer bowl in your freezer all the time, so it’s always ready when you want to make another batch. Otherwise, you’ll have to wait a day for the freezer bowl to freeze.
I’ve had mine over a year, paid about $70 with 2 bowls. It’s not a 5 gallon hand crank White Mountain, but if you want to keep a quart or several in the freezer it’s awesome. Do yourself a favor and get the Jeni’s Ice Cream Kindle book and try the roasted strawberry recipe (then all the others…)! Word of caution, a lot of reviews talk about the plastic beater breaking, mine is going strong with no problems to date. $30? Well worth it!
I have worn out 2 over many years because I use it so much. My favorite of many custard or ice cream flavors I have made is chocolate marshmallow!
My healthier favorite is to use fresh OR frozen raspberries to make a frozen berry dessert. I make little meringue “clouds” and put a scoop on top. The color of the raspberry is stunning on the pure white meringue.
Sigh…Red is already sold out…guess I’ll grab two of the white ones. Was going to spend 70$ on the kitchenaid attachment but 10 percent of those seem to leak after 4-5 uses…might as well get two of these for the same price.
My husband and I got one of these 10 years ago, with an extra bowl. Still going strong, and makes great ice cream. We always keep a bowl in the freezer so we can make ice cream whenever we want. Some of the odder combinations we’ve made: Lavender Honey, Basil, Ginger Honey, and Rosemary. This is a great price on this thing–you can’t go wrong with it. People are asking how much it makes—I don’t remember exactly, but it’s enough for a family of 4, with enough left over for dessert the next night too.
