If I can get a straight answer on whether this will handle a classic or not I may be in for one. Bought my gf a refurb classic last Christmas and I’d love to give her something to go with it.
This has an av in. It will work with any device as long as you have av cables. Right - I use my Zune with my sonic impact because I have av cables for my zune. If you have av cables for your Zune, Ipod or whatever, you can hook them up to this the same way you would to a TV and it will work.
Also - you guys are over looking the yummy goodness of hooking up a HD converter box to one of these and turning it into a television. That’s right - a TV converter box had an av out you can hook up to anything that has an av in and turn it into a TV. I have one on my sonic impact. The difference between that and this is that this has 180 degree swivel screen.
How hot does this get? Can i keep it in my lap and watch things without getting burnt?
Faethe–
Do you mean one of those converter boxes folk used for legacy tvs when stations went all-digital last summer (ie, the ones that had the coupons)?
Since you have one there, does that mean that there are full RCA connections on the back? If not, what kind of connections are on your model? Also I cannot figure out how you would be able to change channels. Have you done this? How did you resolve that?
Even if there is no easy way around hacking it into a tv, having three plug RCA connections could open this up to a lot of other uses (cheapo monitor, connecting to a camcorder or dvd player, etc.)…But I want to be sure it really is an RCA connection before hitting the “buy” button.
The converter boxes have the digital TV tuner the analog TV lacks. Most come with a remote and you change channels on the digital tuner, not on the outdated analog tuner on the TV.
Go back to woot’s homepage and click on the image. The bigger image shows all the components that come with this purchase. The included cable is for the AV in/out ports. red/white/yellow connector on one end. Radio Shack sells gender benders if you need the female plugs.
Spec Sheet:

A lot of the posted questions can be answered by reviewing these documents
There is a frustrating lack of reviews or information on these anywhere besides the user manual. Think I’m going to pass.
Anyone know if it will show the contents from the iPod’s screen on the larger screen when you’re not watching a video? Kind of difficult to use the remote to control music playing when you can’t see what it’s doing…
Is this compatible with the iPod Touch?
No. Read the last part of the item description on the main page where it describes what this works with.
Does this work with the 80 or 160 gig IPod???
I am assuming this will work with a 5th generation IPOD 80gb?
This would be cool if it also had a dvd player.
Also does the ipod still display its video while the player is on? It would be stupid to have both your ipod screen and this 7 inch one going at the same time.
Does it not say that it works with dockable iPods? 30pin. My iPod touch fits into that category. They also mention that it works with the new iPods. That’s a pretty broad statement and would also suggest compatibility. What the text doesn’t say is that it won’t work.
Works with:
- Not your iPod!
Resolution:
- Surprise me!
Pass.
I already have one that works with not my iPod. Makes a dandy kitchen TV though, when paired with an old VCR or one of those free digital converter boxes. Also works as a sideboard monitor, if you have S-video out on the PC (I put Pandora on it) and an S-video to composite converter cable (home made). The spec sheet somebody linked to this unit mentions S-video, but the AV cable shown has a composite RCA video connection, so you would have to make or buy that part.
Wouldn’t have to do anything but plug it in if you have a standard battery-operated video game system.
the following makes me think it DOES work with 5th gen. Do you agree?
From the manual:
The photo and video selections are for iPod with video (5th generation).
The photo selection is also suitable for iPod photo.
When done, slide the Power button to OFF and also turn off the iPod.
My daughter has a 3rd gen 8g nano. I would love to get this for her but I still can’t seem to determine if it will work with her nano or not. Any thoughts from anyone?
Strange that neither the spec sheet nor the manual list the resolution. I’m tempted to buy this, but not if it’s a mere 320x240.
^This. I heard about the converter box trick in a woot thread. That’s when I hooked one up to my sonic v55. You change channels with the converter box’s remote - not the remote for the screen.
Sadly, I just noticed that Target has a 7inch digital TV for under $50 this week so this woot is not for me
However, you can get a converter box used off ebay for between about $20 - $25 shipped. And yes, these are the same ones everyone got a $40 coupon for.
It will if you put it in a separate dock and hook up to it through av cables. Any unit that has a video out - not just apple products - will work with this. HOWEVER - not every product will fit in the cradle.
You are asking if a 5th gen will be able to sit in the cradle and spool video. I don’t think so. The documentation makes no mention of that.
These things were well over $100 when they came out. This woot is pretty much for the sound system and the screen unless you have an older gen ipod. Like WAYYY older gen.
