Time to learn all about the processor

Does the keyboard have backlighting and the arrow keys are full sized or not? I hate half sized up and down keys.

[MOD: Yes, has backlit.]

According to the Dell website:

“The backlit keyboard with 10-key numeric keyboard makes working in low-light environments much easier - it spoils you for anything less.”

However, as to your other concern, a photo of the keyboard shows half-size arrow keys.

Aaarrrggghhh! You guys finally have a good 17" laptop with a Full HD screen at a sweet price, and I don’t have the money! Damn you Woot! Damn you straight to He**!!!

Would this be the Home version of Windows 8.1, or?

There’s no “Home” version of Windows 8. There’s Windows 8.1 and Windows 8.1 Pro. This is the former (not Pro).

Here’s a comparison chart of them.

So a couple things to point out here:

This is the first time we’ve been able to offer the current generation of the i5 processor. While it’s been out a while, it takes a while for it to trickle down in to the factory reconditioned market.

Keyboard is backlit.

Also (and I’m talking to gak0090 here), you’ll note that this has the Full HD some of you have been clamoring for.

And lastly, when you receive your computer, be sure to TRANSFER OWNERSHIP from Woot to you. Dell registers the unit to us first. This is the same for every retailer.

anyone know if you can buy a dell extended warranty on something like this?

How large is the solid state portion of the hybrid drive?

Best to check directly with Dell for that.

8gb, on Dell’s site.

Thanks for that. I have Pro on my current computer and I do use Bitlocker as well as remote desktop. I guess I could find alternatives to those.

Does this get the new up grade the end of July at no cost.

Here’s Microsoft’s FAQ on this.

I would want to set up this machine as a dual boot with Linux. I do not need the touchscreen functionality but has anyone had experience setting this hardware configuration up with Linux?

Nice! Full HD for the pixel whores like me! I think the I5 is the better buy for the money here. The performance is close enough to the I7 and most people won’t need more than 8GB ram, let alone 12GB. Use the $100 you save to buy a real SSD, and use the hybrid as a backup.

I agree with this 100%.

I think it is important to note that both of these processors are optimized for low power consumption to extend battery life, rather than raw performance. Pretty good info to know depending upon how much you intend to use the device unplugged.

What good would that small a solid state partition be? Too small for Windows, for instance. Or is it used by the HD itself for optimization?
