Dell OptiPlex Intel Core i5 3.1GHz Desktops

Here’s the differences we were given by the Computer team:

790 chipset is Q65
990 chipset is Q67.
990 can support RAID while 790 can’t.

I read your posts!

Looks like it comes with the 3.5" 1TB drive, which means it has the wrong tray for two 2.5" drives for a RAID setup. Oh well.

I have had a 95% failure on the Power supplies at my work (under warranty) the other 5% are failing now out of warranty and have had similar CPU fan isues.

YAY! and now you have something in your signature!

Optiplexes are business/enterprise class desktops and our standard model in the part of Academia (engineering) I work.

They’re workhorses and generally built well.

I do however have an innate distrust of small form-factor PCs regardless if they’re optiplexes or not since they tend to have really lame PSUs. Heat is less of a problem with intel CPUs anymore but smaller units can still have issues when crapped up with dust so keep them clean.

Oh yeah, if you’re planning on just using these as a beater desktop they have the advantage of being pretty much entirely tool-less and easy to disassemble for the most part.

Computer died on the 1st day of use.

I’m very sorry. You have a one-year warranty with Metro. Be sure to contact them.
