my monitor is not calibrated, but that looks more like yellow than orange to me.
edit: i guess it could be a faded orange. nm.
Arg. Since it said “technical rules” I assumed it was only the technical rules that applied like line size, colors, halftones. Doh. I second the “Noooooo!” sentiment. Ha.
Thirded…mine will work without but it’s better with. Plus woodcuts can have lettering!
Been working on this several days. It is Psychedelia (in case you couldn’t tell )

I think that’s really cool!
I don’t know, but orange you glad you asked, at least?
@leslieh - so you redrew all that? Just wondering, since there’s the “no filters” rule.
I drew the dots. Everyone. I created a brush that made dots at various sizes (revised one), spaces, scattering.
@nitetigerz Thanks!
I say yes, because Travis is very reasonable (and handsome).
Case for text being allowed:
The rule wasn’t extremely clear. It didn’t say follow all of the rules except the pop culture ones. It said follow the “technical rules,” which could make one infer that not all of the rules are “technical rules,” only some of them are. Therefore, some rules must not be “technical rules.” One could then deduce that the “technical” rules would be the ones that refer to the rules pertaining to the technical aspects of the design to make them adhere to the style they’re trying to emulate while also making them printable (number of colors, dot size, halftone use, etc). In this thinking, “no text” would not be a technical rule, but an “other rule” that was implied by the statement that one must adhere to not the “rules” for each derby, but specifically to the “technical” rules.
Since the derby theme was given ahead of time, a lot of time has passed between then and the time of “no text” clarification.
If you don’t allow text in this derby, you’ll have to prepare for a lot of style-themed daily submissions with text.
(Reason number one is the best because I used phrases like “one could infer.” If it was too convoluted, the short version reads: “But, but… I did a design with text. :(”)
Excellent points. I completely agree. Travis IS handsome.
Also, it’d be nice if text was allowed – at least change it to a “no fonts” rule?

Fair enough, you make good points. We weren’t very clear. All technical rules apply, text allowed, all pop-culture/theme restrictions no longer apply.
Here’s the revised one with more dots and more variety of size of dots

Vectors are allowed, right? I ask because it says “must be drawn by you.”

It was the lengthy Point #1 wasn’t it? I didn’t think anyone could possibly make it through all of it.
(thank you!) :)!!!

*Mental note. Compliment Travis on his looks in the future.

I told him about the handsome comments before he saw them. I think he mighta blushed a little.
I would say the light cast by the orb should be more of a gradient rather than all the same. That would add more depth to the floor. I love the stars and orb!
Can I get some feedback on this?

I had to basically redo the psychedelic one because of gradients, but I’m all set with two designs this week, woo!

Nice! Has a wonderful visual waver!
Nice one! I agree with Leslie, that you need more definition on your depth… My only other question would be which of the art styles are you going for? Maybe I’m not getting the concept right…
