Inspired by “Love and Marriage”
Whether you like it or not, the definition of Love and Marriage is evolving.
Frank Sinatra’s “Love and Marriage” (a song many people only recognize as the theme from Married… with Children which premiered in 1987) was first released in connection with a 1955 television performance of Thornton Wilder’s 1938 play Our Town–which is set in 1901.
Think about that: 1901, 1938, 1955, 1987.
And now ** 2013 **.
Think about how the definition of Love and Marriage has changed through the years.
In 1901, women weren’t even enfranchised.
In 1938 there were miscegenation laws–laws forbidding interracial marriage–in 30 states.
By 1955, some of those laws had been repealed, but they weren’t all repealed until 1967.
In 1987, no country on Earth recognized same-sex unions–though two years later, the Netherlands became to the first.
And here we are now in 2013, and the definition of Love and Marriage continues to evolve…
