I would say that this is a decent price for a decent bike. According to REI, the weight is 32 pounds, which is on the heavy side. For a little more money, you could shave about a third to a quarter off that.
The components are not high end, but acceptable. The derailleurs are fine - for Shimano mtb, the ranking (and price) goes as follows:

  1. Tourney (cheapest but definitely okay)
  2. Altus
  3. Acera
  4. Alivio
  5. Deore
    6-10. SLX, Zee, XT, XTR…
    Bottom line: for $300, you are probably not going to do much better.
