Early Warning Radar/Laser Detector

I’ll stick to my Valentine One, thanks.

Here is one of my posts on radar detectors, from the Cobra a few weeks back

Here

Thanks to NightGhost for cutting thru the marketing hype. Police use three bands of radar, plus laser. In general, additions “bands” offered by manufacturers are more to assist in weeding out false alarms than picking up a real cop radar. And more is not always better (just ask LeBron).

People will come in and point out the superiority of Valentine, Escort or Bell. And they are right, they are vastly superior devices for professional drivers (truckers, etc) and habitual speeders. If your driving habits tend towards the “get in the fast lane and keep up with traffic” this and other mid to low priced radar detectors are for you, if you understand how they work and remain vigilant.

If you’re driving habits tend towards the “get in the left lane and yap on the cell phone BLOCKING TRAFFIC FOR MILES DURING RUSH HOUR BECAUSE I’M A SELF-CENTER JERK” … well, please, don’t buy this or any other detector. We’re hoping the police will pull you over and clear up the delay.

On the other hand, you get zapped by laser, no matter what laser DETECTOR you use, you are screwed. The only real protection against laser is a laser jammer, which are legal (radar jammers are not).

Perhaps in your state - I don’t know all the laws.

Legally Speaking with Bob Mionske: Headphones

Thats the power supply.

When they say 10band they are including the laser bands.

So does anyone know anything about this brand?

Quality? Its definitely no Escort Passport X50(What I Own) or Valentine One…but they all work basically the same. Question, if you pass a cop and your radar/laser detector doesn’t go off, and you are speeding…and the cop pulls around and gives you a ticket…then how did they detect your speed???(This happened to me recently even with the X50 I own which is supposedly one of the best on the market)

+1

however, if you live in jersey this will do you some good against radar (how much better? who knows?), but a lot of municipalities are starting to use laser here.

your best best is an x50, redline, or v1 with a laser diffuser kit.

No - it does have a headphone jack. you can even see the little headphone symbol:

90%x90%

edit: arrghh - the symbol is cut off. You can see it on the item page link, or by dragging this image a bit to the left.

[MOD: Fixed]

p.s. There’s only one laser band, so that would just bring the total to 4. From the FAQ I posted last night:

"Q: What is meant by a “10 band” radar detector?
A: Some manufactures are touting their “10 band” detectors as the most comprehensive protection available. This is merely marketing hype. The net effect is misleading and creates confusion in what protection you really need.

_ Today, there are only THREE frequencies allocated for traffic radar monitoring and ONE means of monitoring traffic speed with laser (infrared laser beam at 904 nm). The “other 6 Bands” are artificially created by counting different models of laser guns, undetectability to the VG-2 and various alerts from Safety systems SEPARATELY. A description of “10 band” or any other such mention does NOT mean you’re getting any additional protection."

Actually, it’s so that if the cop is targeting cars nearby, you’ll pick up some of the scattered laser beam, giving you a chance to slow. Possibly by the time the cop decides to target you.

This is $179 for a refurb at pacificgeek.com?!? Are they insinuating that we Pacific Northwesterners are a stupid, stupid bunch wo don’t know a scam when we see one? Or are they trying to nab unsuspecting Easterners using their Pacific ‘coolness factor’? Sheesh! There are some pretty great comments on this Woot deal over at the Deals.Woot site, BTW.

They add headphone jacks to these things so you can use it on a motorcycle. Headphones under the helmet… Of course if your motorcycle has a sun visor to hang it on, you would be able to see the display.

My experience with cheap detectors is as follows: If you are looking for a novelty item to have in your car, this one will work for you. If you roll in the fast lane and do not like tickets, get a Valentine 1, Escort 8500 X50, etc…

an aircraft clocks your speed between two known points on the ground

did you ask to see the radar, because if they don’t show you, they can’t give you a ticket.

Got mine today…a couple of problems:

  1. There is a constant static like sound that comes from the speaker while the unit is idle.
  2. When radar is detected, I can barely hear the alert. This is with the volume at 10 (max).
  3. For some reason, the unit gets really hot on the bottom.

Anyone else having issues like these?

I haven’t gotten any problems like this yet. Your laser detector is most likely defective. Try contacting BG Tech at 630-250-1983 to get your laser detector fixed or replaced. Please let us know if you need further assistance.
