This seems to be a rip-off of a scene from the show Gravity Falls:
Yes.
It is supposed to be a reference to Gravity Falls.
A parody or homage and a rip-off aren’t the same things. As simic said, his work references the other thing but isn’t a direct copy.
(Please note: I don’t work for Woot, I just volunteer to help out here on the forums. And I’m sure as heck not a lawyer. This is just my own little interpretation.)
No, I’m not a lawyer. A sure as heck not a lawyer. I don’t even play one on TV.
Copy art, change hat, stretch proportions slightly, submit to woot, profit.
Yes!
That was the goal.
If it makes you feel any worse, Woot gives out $1000 to 100% traced stuff.
Hey guys, I think we’ve covered the artwork enough. It was intended to be a parody but it’s no copied artwork by any means. No different than doing a take on Star Wars, Star Trek, etc.
Ok. Have a great day.
Just wanted to let potential purchasers know that they are buying what is basically a trace. Some people are fine with that, some people aren’t.
Simic is one of our tried and true artists. It may be a likeness but I guarantee, it’s not a trace.
I just want everyone to know that I will be drawing 20 more of these but with different hats and occasions.
I’ll vote for them.
