Good grief! Do people still use these things?

“I’ve been drivin’ all night,
My hand’s wet on the wheel
There’s a voice in my head
That says buy this Escort iX!”

Radar Love

As long as speed limits are improperly set so that cops can use it as an excuse to stop anyone, these will still be used by smart drivers.

I have had one in my car since 2003. I have avoided dozens of tickets. The laser shifter add on is great too but expensive. I can not imagine driving a car without a detector.

I have an Escort Passport Radar/Laser detector, and while it’s great for detecting the different bands of radar, it has never picked up laser. I got a speeding ticket about 6 months ago, the cop used laser, and my detector never made a peep. The laser beam is extremely small, and unless they happen to aim it directly at your detector,(as opposed to the front of your car) the detector will not detect it.

I have this. Paid full price about 8 months ago right when it came out. Range is very good. It has some trouble with certain vehicle collision detection systems, the new Chrysler Pacifica minivan in particular. My laser has gone off a couple times. I would buy it again.

I have a Mazda 6 2017. I was told my car “has radar” to detect cars in my blind spot. Will this interfere?

I was driving on the interstate in Georgia last year going with the flow of traffic at 95 mph. I was shocked so many were driving that fast. I looked in my rearview mirror and saw a Georgia State Trooper gaining on me. I nervously slowed down but he came around me with the flow of traffic and didn’t pull anyone over. Wow, I sure could have used one of these radar detectors!

Every single time I get on the highway!

Can’t tell you how many times mine has paid for itself.

Both me and my wife have the older Escort Passport 8500 x50 and absolutely love them. People are amazed at how far out we are able to detect cops on KA band. Wonder if we would gain anything by upgrading.

As with anything, the tool is only as smart as the operator. Some things to know:

Some blind spot systems will cause a false positive (from other vehicles. Yours will not cause interference). You’ll quickly learn how to tell if it’s false or not simply by sound, signal strength, and quickness in which the detector says you are close to it.

In the US, X band is not used for Speed enforcement.

K band radar is short range, and generally used by police that are moving. You’ll also pick up some automatic store doors because they use a similar wave length. Many red light cameras also use this band.

KA is the bread and butter of what you want to protect. This is generally what most cops use when they sit on the side of the road. That’s where my current detectors have saved us countless times. Over hills, around corners. Definitely cought it before the cops were in sight.

Laser: Good luck. Laser uses a VERY small beam, and chances are, if your detector is going off, you have already been tagged. Occasionally, you’ll get lucky and you’ll catch a bounce from someone else’s vehicle. If you live in an area with high laser usage, this probably won’t help (I’ve hardly ever seen lasers used in Texas. Rarely).

Detectors are legal in almost all states. There’s only a handful that don’t allow them (I believe Virginia and a few other east cost states).

And finally, with any detector that provides 360* coverage, be mindful how you mount it. Too low, and simple stuff as seats and passengers will block your rear. Too high, and you’ll catch every gas station door in a 100 mile radius.

I just researched it, and one car article said that not only will my Mazda 6’s blind-spot radar interfere with the radar detector in my car, but it will also generate false positives to nearby vehicles. I wonder if this detector has come up with a solution?

Isn’t this actually just a product invented to help the user break the law and avoid arrest? It’s main use is to allow a person to drive OVER the speed limit, correct? Next thing ya know they’ll invent a product to keep you from fastening your seat belt. That’ll save a ton of lives, too!

I’m 70 years old and during my 35 years of working on the road I drove well over 1,000,000 miles. I’ve been stopped for speeding 3 times in my life and got 2 fairly reasonable tickets. I pretty much drive the speed limit and probably never driven over 80 mph for any reason. Sometimes I have to go a little fast to get away from the threat that big trucks cause. I have no need for speed and realize that speed is a big killer on America’s highways.

Agreed. A Radar detector in conjunction with the Waze App. is almost fool proof.
They pay for themselves if you avoid 2 tickets in most places…more than worth it.

That’s all they use in my part of Texas (Dallas).

Personally I think ALL radar detectors should be illegal. If you are driving so fast that you are in constant fear of getting a ticket, you are a menace to the road. Woo-hoo, you avoid a ticket and five miles down the road cause and accident. Slow the heck down and make the roads safer for everyone.

Today I saved $350 by driving the speed limit!

Seriously though if you stick close to the speed limit and use Waze or any other driving program you can reliably know where about 85% of cops are.
