Escort Passport Radar & Laser Detector

Every morning and afternoon.

My daddy used to say that ALL his kids like to drive real comfy with both feet flat on the floor.

The way around that is with this:
http://performancepackage.com/collections/mirror-mount, or mount it on the dash itself. I use one in my jeep (ensures it doesn’t fall off and if it does, it means I ether ran off a cliff, hit a tree or ran over a Hummer. Got a smart cord and ran it to the fuse box (cord tucked away behind the trim). I paid more for mine when I got it but they seems to be half what they use to be (the bracket that is). Also got one of escorts SUPER sticky cup. Lasted all summer on the minivan w/o falling off.

have had to send mine back to escort 3 times in less than three months

I run two 9500xi’s. First one I got 2 weeks after I bought my Jeep in Feb 2009. Other I got 2 years later. They have been dropped, banged and have survived some pretty hot conditions. They both still work fine.

Wooters, this is a 4 yr old radar detector that can be found in surplus stores etc. This is OLD! I had this exact model and it’s annoying how many false negatives it produces. Save your money and invest in the new models that utilizes the latest signaling technology. So much has advanced in radar detection over just the past 2 years and believe me, in technology this is an equivalent tube screen vs. led tvs, it’s seriously outdated and honestly can be found now for under $50. What is it with woot selling archaic laptops and techno lately?

Way over priced. The technology hasn’t advanced enough to justify the price and they still don’t catch camera based speed detectors or helicopters. Just drive safe and be respectful if you get pulled over. Slow down if you notice you are going too fast.

Unfortunately, as long as people think that living in a free country that they’re free to break the laws of that country, then these will have a purpose.

Really? How self righteous to be. Never crawled thru a stopsign? Sped up for a yellow? Gone 80 in a 70? People with your attitude make me sick.

Also, whoever said lasers are best used on stationary targets…wtf are you talking about? A STATIONARY target isnt speeding. Though I think you meant to word it as the LASER is stationary, like the cop is sitting hiding…which IMO 9/10 they all do. Cops dont pull over people for speeding while they too are driving around…everyone slows down when a cop is in the lane.

I think you’re losing the point to the guy who posted “Seriously? People still use these?”. I am guilty of all of the above, but I don’t use one. With highway speed limits at 70, usually you have to be going 80+ where I live for them to pull you over. I’m not for outlawing them- I just don’t see a need for them (at least where I live). I could see where there may be really useful in certain parts of the country that are a lot stricter on enforcing speed limits.

As a side note, what I would like to see is a device that would deliver 10,000 volts of shock to the driver when it takes them more than 3 seconds to respond to a light changing from red to green and make their cell phone explode simultaneously. It should be standard on every vehicle.

Re: Your statement “what I would like to see is a device that would deliver 10,000 volts of shock to the driver when it takes them more than 3 seconds to respond to a light changing from red to green”…

That makes you sound like a psycho - you may want to talk to somebody about having thoughts like this. I’m not even kidding.

Everyone knew what he meant. If you’re going to lash out at people you should probably have your facts straight. The Genesis I and Genesis II systems deploy radar units in the front and back windows of a cruiser, it knows how fast the cruiser is going and can easily calculate front and rear targets. I got nailed by one of these in NH once when the trooper was coming towards me around a curve. So, yes, they certainly do pull people over when they are moving.

Also, the places that have these systems, the cops rarely turn them off so that basically turns the radar detector into a cop detector.

Got any buggy whips to go with this?

The modern radar detector is called “Waze”.

So you’re responding in a conversation regarding use of a device to speed and save time. Yet you are condemning me for my satirical comments regarding people that fail to pay attention while driving. The same people that cost you far more time because you end up missing every stupid light because they are more concerned with texting then having the courtesy to other drivers to pay attention and react in a timely manner. The same people that are weaving while driving because they are more concerned with their devices than paying attention to what’s going on around them. You’re probably one of these people, so why don’t you go ahead and buy one of the radar detectors so you can race 100 mph on the highway, yet sit there and dawdle on your phone while you’re sitting at a light pissing off everyone behind you.

Hi all. Let’s keep this good discussion going by being civil and playing nice.

You’re the one that needs to see a doctor if you think that person was serious. You may not have been kidding, but they OBVIOUSLY were.

Thanks- I’m glad someone gets the satire!

You want me really to go off, just get me started on the laptops that are still made with 1366x768 resolution.

This appears to be (judging by Woot’s image) the older 8500 X50 “gray” model (referring to the case model). If so, it is NOT the same internally as the Best Buy page that conanthelibrarian linked to, which is the 8500 X50 black (easily discerned as such by the product picture and the UPC listed on Best Buy (woot does not list a UPC for their product).

The difference internally is that the 8500 X50 “gray” is the older model and it uses an older “horn” (referring to the internal design used to detect radar). This has an impact on performance and reliability… The 8500 X50 gray has the older Escort S7 horn, while the newer 8500 X50 black uses the newer M4 horn. The M4 is a pretty solid platform, and while the M4 lost some off-axis (side) performance to the S7, it’s largely an advantage in a non-GPS detector on highways since it has boosted on-axis (forward & back) performance and it cuts down on false alarms as you pass shopping centers.

More worrying as someone that owned more than one 8500 X50 gray is one of the reasons Escort moved newer models to the M4 horn is because the S7 horn is not reliable. Over time the S7 horns get out of calibration and eventually will stop working displaying non-stop “service required” messages. This can happen in as little as two years, at which point you’re out of warranty and better off buying a new one.

If woot can clarify if they used an 8500 X50 image that doesn’t accurately represent the product they’re selling (and they’re selling the newer 8500 X50 black instead), this is a great price for a solid entry level radar detector.

If it’s the older 8500 X50 gray model depicted in the woot product image, pass. The reliability issues make it a no-go, and the more reliable/sensitive 8500 X50 black went on sale for $180 on several occasions during the past year (at least, during the last holiday season for sure).

Other tidbits:

  • The 8500 X50, whether the gray or black edition, can be detected by the Spectre RDD (Radar Detector Detector). These tend to be used in areas where radar detectors are illegal for use in all vehicles (Virgina, DC, much of Canada). If you were to risk driving in these areas with a radar detector (which would be a violation of the law), this would be a bad detector to do it with, as a cop with an RDD would have it go off in his car as you passed.
  • GPS enabled detectors are pretty good. The Passport Max/Max 2 are nice because they have GPS to lock out false positives and alert about cameras and such, but they are not as sensitive as some of the non-GPS products (e.g. Escort Redline) and are much more expensive.
  • The Escort Redline has great performance and is undetectable to radar detector detectors, but no GPS (unless you use Escort live and pair your phone to it, in which case you can use the GPS on your phone to lock out false positives).
  • Paying for Escort Live, IMO, is not worthwhile. They kept offering free extensions for the past three years. I have no idea if it’s still free if you own a detector with bluetooth (Max2) or bought a bluetooth enabled power cord.
  • Laser/LIDAR detection is useless on radar detectors because even if it did go off (unlikely, as the beam is about four inches wide at 1,000 feet and they’re usually aiming for a headlight or your license plate), the cop already has your speed with LIDAR by the time the detector makes noise.

Waze is helpful but it isn’t a substitute. Cop reports on Waze are often obsolete, and I’ve passed many cops where I was first to report.

Radar is still the most popular way to enforce speed in many areas. Some areas use LIDAR, but it’s usually a supplement to radar, and LIDAR has challenges that radar does not (can’t be used through a windshield/car window, can’t be used during fog/rain/snow, can’t be used while the patrol vehicle is in motion, must hit a reflective part of a vehicle instead of any part of it, etc.).

In VA the fine is only $85 dollars for using a detector that the donut eater can see. I know because i just paid it. It kept me from getting a over 20 mph speeding ticket which in that liberal money sucking state is a reckless driving, 4 points and $200 dollars…

Speed limits are set as a way to collect additional revenue. It is a well documented fact that 95% of the roads in the US that have had a proper traffic study conducted are way under the natural speed of traffic. “In terms of traffic law, speed limits should reflect the maximum reasonable and safe speed for normal conditions. That is speed limits should be acceptable as reasonable by most drivers and separate high and low risk speed behavior. If lower speed limits are desired, then engineering and other measures should be implemented that reduce speeds to a level that would support a lower limit.” And this is what your liberal money sucking bureaucrats do, they set speed limits artificially low to generate huge revenue. Then they use scare tactics about how speed kills. Speed is no where near the leading cause of traffic accidents or death.
