That area really doesn’t get warm. Like at all. I mentioned in a previous comment, but the heating element is really nowhere near that area. Also, those are not cutouts; they are bumps. It is also quite slanted, and that is just a thin piece of metal over top of more plastic too. The black area in front of it gets hotter, but since the controls are there and it is more of a dome, it is not a good spot for a cup. But thanks for the suggestion.
It arrived with a wire inside that was damaged and disconnected (the pump was not working). But it was easy to fix and required nothing more than a long screwdriver to get the top off.

Mine arrived with a broken pump as well but I can’t seem to get the top to come off. Is there a sweet spot I’m missing?
