If this is “really” a GPS tracker it must need a SIM chip to connect to sat., what is the cost of the sat. service?
It does require a worldwide sim which it comes with but it also requires service to be activated. The website says first month is free but does not give any other info about the cost of monthly service.
According to Amazon Q&A the first month is free and then $4.99 a month. Also it is noted that this is on a 2G network and they guarantee it will work well into 2020. So after 2020 it could be obsolete.
I totally LOVE the idea… imagine if every pet with a chip could be tracked this way.
But max 4 days battery life? Even though this is a great product idea, a 4 day battery life (which we all know will eventually go down to 3 days, 2 days, 1 day battery life…) is just plain useless on a pet.
If you have just one dog, that you irresponsibly let roam the neighborhood… then maybe.
Plus the signal may be obsolete after 2020? That’s right around the corner! BTW, your digital TV signals are slated to disappear 2023 - replaced by another set of frequencies - so your current digital tuners are all obsolete soon. Better think of that before you plunk several hundred or more into a new TV
Couldn’t this just be used to ‘lojack’ about anything? And for $13 - that is stalker territory!
Well, my dog “irresponsibly” jumps through our Invisible Fence pretty regularly, so it’s nice to have a way to track him down. We live out in the country where lots of dogs roam. Our pups apparently can’t resist the temptation to chase the deer that come by…
But, regarding the battery life: the Whistle 3 device which is very similar costs $80, has a $100/year subscription fee and I’m lucky to get 36 hours of battery life from mine. It works sometimes. I’m ready to give the $13 gizmo a shot. The two dogs roam together, so maybe between the two devices I can track them down.
This has a very low rating on Amazon, with many people complaining not only does it not work, but there is a subscription fee that is not disclosed in advance, the clip breaks and the manufacturere is wanky in refunding.
I advise you read those reviews before purchasing on Woot. And, btw, amazon no longer sells this product at all.
Well, not quite since Woot! is owned by Amazon… they are selling off existing inventory here!
My question: Is the SIM replaceable? Google Fi will provide data SIMs linked to your account with no monthly charge - only the $1/MB data fee.
It’s a waste of money.i bought it here last year. Even though all the materials state service cost payable monthly at $4.99, with the price discount on the product buying it on Woot, manufacturer REQUIRES 6 months of service to be paid upfront. As mentioned by another user, Wistle is a far better product.
Wizard188: having researched these type of devices and services for a few years I’ve discovered most, possibly all, of these GPS via GSM cellular devices:
-
only work with a specific web/cloud service and if the company ceases to exist, so does the web/cloud service. Based on the Amazon reviews, the company behind this device has not reached critical mass and is likely to disappear before long, hence the fire sale of the devices on Woot
-
are limited to what carrier networks they will work with, regardless of SIM, due to the radio in the device (this one appears to only support 2G which is fine for the use case but they don’t specify what frequencies or bands the radio supports so it likely only works with on specific carrier or MVNO)
-
related to #2 above, these companies usually have a deal with a specific carrier or MVNO that gives them a kick back on the monthly service fees and, when the company goes out of business or the carrier agreement expires, the device is useless
In a perfect world you could purchase this device and use it with the carrier of your choice and have the option of tying it to a private OpenGPS server or associate it with a Google account in your pet’s name, set it to use the Google Maps API, turn on Google Maps location sharing and track the device & pet easily.
But the above use case doesn’t allow the manufacturer or carrier to lock you in to their ecosystem and subscription fees.
“$50 for 6 months, or $100 for 6 months with 2 months free”
Sham
$50 for 6 months
BIG problem. I’ve tried for two days now to activate the devices but the mobile app reports “Error occurred while communication with braintree server” and the web app doesn’t even get to picking the payment plan. I’ll give it another two days and if i’m still unsuccessful will return the devices.
THIS IS A BAIT AND SWITCH SCAM!! I bought 2, signed up for the subscription service, but they would not connect to the network. No 2G service in my area. Instructions on their website say to call them to have 3G replacements sent. I called and was informed that I would have to pay $198 EACH to have new ones sent. Arghhh!! Pretty peeved right now about getting ripped off!
Good luck with Whistle. I ordered this Find My Pet device with the hopes to replace my Whistle 3. Whistle has now sent me a new tracker THREE times and now are sending me a replacement charger. I updated to Whistle 3 at their advice that connecting to a Wifi is better quality / reliability than connecting to a cell network is. VERY BAD DECISION. I cannot believe Whistle is the top rated GPS. The battery on ALL 3 of the Whistle 3’s has lasted 24 HOURS AT MOST !
Now I learn that the Find My Pet I ordered will only work in the U.K. So Woot kindly refunded my money and I am on the hunt again. Maybe for the current Find My Pet / Trackimo device.
Calling Find My Pet customer service today, I learned that this Find My Pet device works in the U.K. – but not in the U.S.
I called Find My Pet customer service today and learned that this device works on a 2G network, which is unreliable / and/or unavailable in the U.S. The product does still work in the U.K.
I’m lucky to get 24 hours out of my Whistle 3 GPS. I ordered this Find My Pet device to replace the Whistle (which I will be returning and filing a complaint with my credit card to dispute the charge).
I can’t believe Whistle is the top rated pet tracker. NO WAY! It’s unreliable, sends false reports. The whistle 3 has sent me ‘Heads Up, Pet Out of Safe Zone’ messages when the tracker was being charged ! No wonder I can’t get more than 24 hours of battery life ! Oh speaking of that – testing the Whistle 3 for 2-1/2 months now, it only gave me a ‘FULLY CHARGED’ message ONCE !
Wish the designers and engineers of Tagg were still around …
