I’ve given cashiers the exact amount of money (with “change”) with the tax factored in on small grocery purchases, and they looked at me like I was from the moon or something. Had the manager called up to make sure I wasn’t doing anything “illegal” more than a few times.
Having people look at me like I just drowned some puppies just because I know how to do math is part of the reasons why I try not to go out any more than I absolutely have to these days.
Are we doomed? Are they destined for literal slow starvation? My dear Mother a legal refugee taught me at age 5 that those that do not strive may.

No shoplifting, no math challenged cashier, but impersonal. But not all human cashiers are even friendly. Some are visibly in pain standing for hours. Others numb from carpal tunnel nerve compression despite wrist brace.
It’s not the Zoomers I’m worried about, it’s Gen-A.
I’ve met some kids over the past few years who literally didn’t know how doors work. No basic math skills like single-digit addition and subtraction, language skills on par with particularly clever chimps (“he go to store today,” “she go to store yesterday,” etc.), zero rudimentary logic skills (basic if->then stuff), don’t know where the US is on the map or how many states there are, etc. etc. These observations aren’t even racially-biased; it’s across the board.
Millennials are the worst parents. We’ve mentally fucked up an entire generation.
It doesn’t help that in TodayWorld, people who do manual labor are seen as less than. Children, teens and even adults are actively encouraged to spurn blue collar jobs, instead promising riches if they will only follow the 20-year* degree path. Never mind the fact that it’s the blue collar workers who actually make the world go round. Sure, we need cubicle sitters, too. We need doctors and (to a MUCH lesser degree, and it pains me to say this) lawyers. But without the blue collar, manual laborers, nothing gets built. Nothing gets maintained. Nothing gets DONE.
*hyperbole for the sarcasm-challenged.

I would differentiate HVAC and master mechanics skills from even base construction crews.

There is a need for affordable communities. Like the Levittowns of the 1950’s. This approaches that.
That is worrisome. But Generation A ages 11 to 15 is not yet in the work force. There is a bit of time to see literal starvation of some seniors and Gen Z to make fear drive some Generation A to strive. Brutal but motivating as happened in European and Asian societies. The next 10 years i fully expect will have increasingly awful news stories.
We want future Wooters? We need to inspire healthy anxiety in parents to teach their kids a work ethic and future proofing skills.
They are still both blue collar jobs. Manual labor. Beneath the ModernDay up and comer.
You ask any “kid” (God I’m getting old) if they want to be a HVAC tech or a mechanic. Ask them if they want to be a construction worker. You will get the same response in either case.
Fair enough.
I wasn’t downplaying robotics. I am making the observation that manual labor is the only thing that people can do that robots can’t.
Get that robot to FIX the car it built. Get that robot to repair the plumbing it installs (in the future).
But that robot can sure as hell do your books. It can design your buildings.
From what i am reading and two co-workers the answer is yes they did want to do HVAC.
$40 OBD2 continuous monitor Diagnostics i purchased not even dealer mechanic’s $10k static instruments found the fault that proved to be a throttle body board that had an intermittent fault. I had bought the OBD2 diagnostic logger out of frustration. They charged me twice to find nothing. Until i showed them my logging they could not detect the fault.
Same fault happens in F150’s and Mustangs. Fortunately for me, my hybrid electric motor still worked so i went from 65 mph to 40 mph instead of zero in middle of freeway when ICE engine asphyxiated itself.
The community i mentioned was Robotics designed and built. Unique for now. But potential solution to home unaffordability. But cutting out most human labor. Largely no workers on site. Brave new world.
A computer can tell you what sensors are reporting. I can read error codes on a vehicle all day long. They tell you what the SYMPTOMS are, not what the actual fault is. They might can help narrow it down, but… It still takes a HUMAN to actually effect the repairs, if not interpret what the sensors are reporting.
I’d recommend you find a more competent mechanic.
