I’m thinking about 10, max. Won’t start with that many. 6-8 to start, not until next spring.
The coop will be 6x6, with 6 ft on the high side, down to about 3 ft on the lower side and about 3 feet off the ground. The nesting box will be 6 ft wide, 18" deep, sloping roof that opens, 18 tall down to 12 inches… I can get 6 (12" wide) boxes in that area.
I plan to put a couple 2x2 (six foot long) across the upper portion of the coop for the chickens to roost. Plan to get a few vents for each end of the upper area of the coop to allow some cross breeze, maybe the type that can be opened or close by hand.
Nice! I also made an inside feeder for them.
As 3 hens can share a nest, I made a feeder so I lift the ‘egg access’ door and the feeder is there also. Plexi on top so I can see the feed level. It holds about 30lb of feed. The chickens like it, the feed is inside so if the coop door is closed the rodents can’t get to the feed.
They’re opening another dollar general here. That makes like 50 within 20 miles of me. I’m so excited!!! And yes they’re mostly all in horrible neighborhoods with nothing else to shop at. They need to hurry up and add fresh produce to more of their stores
