After Iâd noticed my grandkids flinching a little about my plastic, i scored the NutriChef 24-piece set here for $14. Fooled around with it for a while and decided I liked the idea of glass but was frustrated about this set having some rounds, some squares and some rectangles. Wasnât fond of the 4-sided hinged lids after I hand-washed a few of them (I almost always choose the simplest possible). And red wouldnât have been my choice of color. The research began.
Candidates - Pyrex, Anchor Hocking, Amazon Basics, some unknown brands, and good old Mason Canning jars.
The Mason jars do come in the 1-cup jam jar, the pint, the wide-mouth quart and even the large 2-quart. Liked the metal lids for dishwasher use. And the lids easily replaceable. They would have lined up nicely in fridge or drawer. They were an almost. A funny idea I was enjoying, but I couldnât get into the idea of eating from them.
I was leery of the unknown brands. Some good points about the quality of Pyrex over Anchor Hocking.
Some study on the different set compositions. Counted how many plastics I usually have in play in different sizes. One-person household here, so need use more of the smaller sizes.
Back and forth between Anchor Hocking, Pyrex and Amazon basics. The Amazon basics were runner-up.
Found a well-priced set of Anchor Hocking on the Amazon Warehouse that probably was a return, so ordered it. Decided I liked the round dishes, the simpler lids and the colors (blues, teals and greens). They nest and stack nicely. The set composition fit well with what I do, although I might get a few more in the two smaller sizes. Thought Iâd just nail a set at a time as they appeared in the Warehouse, but then spotted a very good sale price on the sets at Macyâs and promptly nailed 3 more sets. They are working out very well. Stuff in the fridge/freezer in the old plastic is gradually coming out, and the glass pieces working in.
One granddaughter had expressed serious âwantâ for the NutriChef set, so I gave it to her. She is loving it, and I now know what her next few gifts will be. Meanwhile a grandson noticed, and made sure I knew that he could use some also, but he is supposed to go back and check with fiancee to make sure we get the right shape/color/lid/set composition. And then I know what their next few gifts will be.
Amazon Basics was the runner-up.
Iâm a little worried about my concrete floor with only linoleum over it, but donât tend to drop things so probably OK on that count. I plan on mostly hand washing the lids.
Thanks to everybody for your comments. I was curious if somebody would report going with Mason jars. It still makes a lot of sense to me. I could really see them for a bachelor apartment. They are inexpensive and can always be converted to use for jams and canning.
