One boss was “terrible” because 1) he had little knowledge of his employees’ field of expertise, 2) he added very little in providing goals and running interference, and 3) he was simply looking to get to the next rung on the corporate ladder through kissing the right behinds. I was telling him about a relative who had just passed away, and he “paused” our conversation to shake a hand and greet a particular “important” person who happened to be passing by in the hallway. The good old corporate ladder brings out the “terrible.”

Oh… let me tell you… out of all the jobs I’ve had in my life (it’s always their fault I’ve left, never mine!), the guy I work for now is a REAL ass. Arrogant. Sarcastic. Wants shit done HIS way. Expects me to come to work every day, whether I’m sick (cough, cough, 
) or not. Y’all know the type.
I’ve tried everything I can to get the sob to fire me, but no matter what I do… He just won’t do it.
Did I mention that I am self-employed?

My first real job after high school at 18 working the graveyard shift. He used to pick on me probably because of my young age but it made me learn how to handle the potential a-hole bosses in the future

Oh lordy… who hasn’t.
But also, wanted to mention a neat little thought I read a few months back. Generally speaking, especially in the retail world, folks will be moved up the chain as long as they’re good at their current role. Then they get stuck in the role that they suck at. Hence… terrible management.

Yes, I’ve had a few. However, only one was so bad I remember her name, rather than just the job - Jen was a raving biatch, and quitting in the middle of my shift was quite satisfying.

TLDR; Yes, many.
Where to start? Hollywood Video San Pedro, CA 2000. I had a power hungry boss who called the store phone from his office. When I didn’t answer with the exact greeting he wanted, he proceeded to yell at me in front of the customers even though I’d never been trained. He was fired for watching videos the store couldn’t rent in the nude in his office. Brylane call center Universal City, Texas 2002: I was a teenager selling women’s clothing at an inbound call center for Lerner, Sear’s, Roman, and several other catalogs. Getting up to use the bathroom counted as non-productive time. We could get fired for not making certain suggestions and offers. We had to read through scripts and make offers even if the customers told us to stop. We would sign an early out list, and one day our manager refused to let us go even though the operations tower told us we could. That place closed down shortly after I moved away. University of Missouri in Columbia Missouri 2005. Our new managers first day she threatened to fire me, because I questioned having to count every single slice of cheese. She once sent me home saying that I wasn’t delegating tasks to the student employee. I tried to explain that he was high as a kite and was incapable of asking the customer if they wanted fries. Another time, I was written up because a customer’s feelings were hurt by asking if she’d spilled her drink and moved to another table. She had, but I didn’t call her out on her lie. That manager was fired for racism. Columbia College in Columbia Missouri 2010. I told a manager that I’d appreciate it if they gave me at least 24 hours notice before mandating me to work my day off. The following Monday, he, my boss, and my bosses boss closely evaluated my work, and while I was able to defend my work against their interrogation, they fired me. Less than a year later, 2 of them were fired, the head of the department was forced to resign, and President of the college fired the entire human resources department. I took them for all the unemployment I could. I won’t say where I work now, but the managers work harder than some of our employees doing our jobs, because it’s easier than trying to discipline us. Coworkers smoke weed in the parking lot, take 30 minute breaks instead of 15, get on their phones and stop working altogether, make their own schedules, and all management does is tells us in group meetings that that it’s got to stop. I wouldn’t mind so much, but those of us who actually do the work, get mandated to work overtime to pick up the slack of those who don’t. Meanwhile, I’m waiting to hear back on a when I start my new position I’m a different department with a $10.00 raise and a better manager.
