This looks pretty good, and the price is right. Do you own a Kreg pocket hole jig? They are $99 at Lowes.
Just looking at it, I’d say it’s not even fair to it to compare it to Kreg
Can u elaborate? I’m interested but don’t know enough to tell good from bad.
Lots of reviews and comparisons at Amazon…
In for one. I’m way past needing to install the occasional pocket screw. I think this will do nicely.
I picked one up too. I’ve got a wobbly table that needs some reinforcing to try it out on first. Woot’s favorable pricing here makes it an easy buy.
The Kreg Pocket Hole Jig is $40 and the the Kreg Mini Jig is $20.
I own the Pocket Hole Jig and have used it quite a bit (built a house full of cabinets) and it works as well as when I first bought it.
-
The body is plastic but the insert is hardened steel. The Woot one is Aluminum through and through. I would suspect that it would lose some precision over time due to wear.
-
As far as repairing existing furniture (like a wobbly leg). I think you will find it frustrating to clamp the Woot version to existing framework since it has the clamp built-in. The Kreg version does need an external clamp, but that makes it more versatile when it comes to using it for this sort of repair.
-
The stock thickness is adjustable on the Kreg so the screw will always be centered in the stock. It appears that the Woot version can accommodate various thickness of stock, but the back set is fixed. That means the screw will always be the same distance from one face of the stock.
-
I can say the Kreg provided drill bit is a very high quality. I have used it in everything from poplar to red oak and the bit is still as sharp as new. The Woot version may be a good bit as well…
-
I would also think that given the small diameter of the clamping screw on the Woot version and the fact that it is threaded through aluminum there may be some pretty quick wear. But, probably fine if you only use it occasionally.
I dunno ¯_(ツ)_/¯ my quick lookup was flawed I suppose. Too late now.
Interesting - in the video the jig has what appear to be steel sleeves for the drill bit. I assume those have gone away since they aren’t mentioned in the write-up or shown in the pictures.
You must have found this Kreg Kit on Lowes that is $99. And you are right in that it does include a built-in feature for clamping the stock without needing an extra clamp of some sort, like the Woot version. The 2 versions I linked to do require an additonal clamp of some sort.
I didn’t watch the video, but you’re right. It does show a completely different device. In fact, they show two devices: the one Woot is apparently selling and another one.
Here is a grab of the one in the video. Can Woot confirm which one they are selling?
The Kreg also uses square drive screws rather than the philips head screws that this system uses.
According to the specs it uses a square drive.
Jig kit includes: pocket hole jig with clamp, #32 3/8 In. Step Drill Bit (replaceable), 3/8 in. steel stop collar, Hex wrench 6 in. square drive bit, 24 coarse square drive screws, 24 fine square drive screws, 24 wooden pocket hole plugs, Hard plastic carrying case
Good catch. I was going by what I saw in the video and the topmost picture.
