I have a friend who does inbox zero.

I go the other way.

Filters for the win. They file themselves.
Unfortunately, I hate checking email and they pile up.
Deleting emails?

Work: I never delete anything but actual malicious spam with virus or nasty links. I have a huge archive that goes back over 2 decades.
Personal: I have one e-mail that has a link in it for a movie preview that I want to watch after work.
If I don’t need it for CYA purposes I do not have it.
I use aliases. (Throwaway email addresses)
75% of the accounts I sign into now use the aliases. The email goes to your inbox as usual, but you can delete the alias in the future. I use Proton Mail.
I work in tech, I live with tech all around me, but in my opinion, the tech gets burdensome in some ways. The expectation of reading and replying to thousands of messages in various formats. How did we get here?
(Great poll question, by the way)
1, and it will be deleted today
I have 3 email addresses I currently use: 1 for work and 2 personal.
Unread? I just deleted this morning’s batch of spam & junk and I have a couple dozen to read later (Substacks & stuff).
Read? Ummm… too many to contemplate.

Zero, I clear my inbox & junk mail several times a day. Inbox gets under 20 emails a day, junk is now under 100 a day. ![]()

None. But before I got to the office and went through things this morning, there were around 8 legit unread emails.
I keep all my email accounts very clean.. and I rarely get much spam. Every so often I’ll get some crap from someone using my email address to sign up for free wifi or some other crap.. and I deal with those quickly directly through the website/hosting provider it originated from.
A lot of the big bulk-mailer companies actually have global blocklists you can have yourself added to so you don’t get any email from any of their customers. Just email their support team a lot and be annoying.. they’ll add you to it.
I just checked. There are a little over 56K emails.
I lost count after 1.

For my personal emails, I keep it trimmed down to anything I deem as important or worth keeping for memory’s sake. So personal emails are under 50 in the main inbox, as most memory emails are sorted into specific sub-folders, like family trips, college transcripts, work application stuff, etc. But work email has over 6200 emails, read and unread total, because I never know what I’ll need to refer back to. Though I probably could comb through and delete most of them, I don’t want to.
I thought my 83 was bad
Was over 35,000 but I’ve been working on getting rid of them & I am down to about 7,000. Will hopefully be down to 100 or less in a week or two.
32,650 and counting. Unread. (Not kidding)
So, I just skim subject lines and only open and flag the important stuff. This system has somehow worked for me for the past 11 years ![]()
(I did recently go on an unsubscribing spree to get down from >200/day to ~75/day, but I’m still on track to break 300K by next week)
I have so many. Already hitting the 70% full notification for my personal email. I guess I need to start deleting…
