Is this like a netbook type or an actual laptop that I can download programs on? Anyone know?

Bought one of these in March. HD died today, so it was good for 6 months 
The good news is that hard drives are a standardized item and are replaceable. HP has the service guide posted here:

The question is: did you make a full backup and/or make a set of recovery disks? You will need them to reload the OS.
