If I yanked the HD out and replaced it with a SSD, would this be a decent laptop to throw Ubuntu (or some similar flavor) on for casual use?

Depends. Do you have one lying around?

I do, a 480GB Crucial M500. I guess my question was more of a “should I?” than a “could I?” Not sure how this CPU/GPU would handle the latest LTS or Mint builds, or if it was even worth the bother.
