Nice PC - windows 8.1 is deal killer. Don’t have time to wipe it to functional pre-windows 8 OS. Would rather buy refurb elsewhere with Win7 loaded

Um, this is a touch screen … putting Windows 7 on it would be silly. Aside from the UI, Windows 8 is quite superior to Window 7. Window 8.1 fixes a lot of the problems with the Windows 8 UI, especially if you install Classic Shell or similar.

Buzz Kill’r. You wouldn’t use a touchscreen display with Win 7!
Try the 17" Dell Inspiron at MicroCenter for an additional $50 new. It comes with a Core i5 cpu, non-touch screen that is lower rez and you could be happy? And now backlit keyboard.

90 day warranty? Their faith in their own products is inspiring.

STAY AWAY FROM HP LAPTOPS. Especially the 17.3 Envy models. THE HINGES BREAK ALL THE TIME. It’s a known issue with this model and happened to me twice, thankfully mine was covered by the Costco Warranty.
But help me out people. I must resist the temptation. Must Resist!
Come on naysayers and product disparagers.
Is the warranty from HP? Factory Refurbished by HP? Not a 7200 rpm HD. No BluRay. Differences in quality/durability between HP Product Lines. Is Envy line a better consumer line than the HP Pavillion line?
Heck this unit has a Haswell processor but non discreet graphics. Current generation cpu? 1080p display. USB3.0, 4.0 BT. But what is that Wifi Spec? And WiDi?
Wanna buy it now. HELP ME RESIST. I’ve listed critical areas. Hmmm… good ratings at the egg and elsewhere.

Thanks for sharing. So you have had personal experience with this same Envy model or just with some other Envy model? I could say the same about some Dell Inspiron models, but not all Inspirons since different models have different case designs.

This exact model. The hinges are screwed directly into the plastic bottom half of the base of the laptop and the plastic has a nasty habit of cracking around the hinge screws.
Oh… Resistance is Futile! But I really want to buy an M4 type AR15, maybe a Bushmaster or S&W M&P. Or I’d like to spend this same amount or less for a Glock 34 for target shooting.
But I’d use a laptop significantly more often (every day) as opposed to going out target shooting. That’s got to factor in somewhere.

I too was on the *@!#% Win 8 bandwagon, until I discovered the free Classic Shell.
Get rid of metro UI etc, bring back the win 7 start menu, etc.
The only thing I really miss is the fully functional windows backup in 7, though the shadow copy based version in 8.1 isn’t half bad.
As for the person saying 8.1 has a long way to go on security, care to back that up with some facts? 8.1 receives security updates just like 7, if not faster.
