OK, now I’m beginning to think I’m seeing things. It did see the original list price when I first looked at them which implies they are new. Now it says they are reconditioned from the factory and the list price of $699.99 is gone. An evolving web site. Don’t blink!
This is also 8gb of RAM ($379)instead of 4gb (for $359). I just bought the 8gb version last week for $379. So far it’s working great, and after a short learning curve Windows 8.1 doesn’t make me want to hurt myself anymore.
Bought a similar machine - Pavilion DV7 - couple years ago. Good machine, but some of the keyboard key tops like to break off, overheating is an issue (with a gamer using it), and recently the HD died and couldn’t be recovered; it was 750GB 5200rpm, likely same maker as this model’s. So be sure to create recovery disks right at the get-go – I had to order replacement disks from HP; not too expensive, and they arrived quickly, but still an unneeded expense. And of course, backup your data. I’m replacing the OEM HD with a Western Digital, which I feel much better about, and bought a laptop cooling fan as well.
The model number is Pavilion 17-e111nr (or very close), I ordered mine last week from Woot with the same deal/price/specs, mine is red though. Your stuck with Win8.1 unless you have a Win7 install/license somewhere to downgrade but all things being equal, this little beauty runs well and fast. Tried a little League of Legends and it produces a mid-40’s frame rate on fullscreen with the embedded graphics (just make sure to update them from AMD’s site). Runs Office 2013 very well and no problems networking to external/router based hard drives.
I have had mine for about two weeks, and am pleased. Lighter than I thought, quick, and you could not tell it is a refurb., does not heat up as much as its replacement. Would like the battery to last a little longer, but the large screen and weight have to be considered. No problems with windows 8.1. Great purchase! jOe
I’ve had this machine for a few days now. I got a bit scared when I turned on Speccy and it said my processor was running at 95 C under load and idling at 80 C.
Speedfan (more accurately I think) says it’s 50 C under load and idles out at 30 C.
I’m in the market for a new laptop, but I’ve been on a Mac for the last 4 years, and am eager to get a linux laptop going again. Will this do it? (I’ll be running Kubuntu, not that there should be a huge difference)
Kubuntu KDE environment might overwhelm the processor. But I never ran KDE on it, so it might work. On the regular Unity flavor all the bells and whistles work like a charm.
I dont believe it is NEW is appears to be refurbished as it states on the origianl page, pls let me know if it is new and if so what is the Model # thanks…
