I vote that it isn’t missing at all. Just hidden under something on the desk.
It could even be in plain sight. I once accused people of stealing my calculator after I looked everywhere for it. My husband walked over (yes we work together) and looked at me and started laughing. It was next to my computer keypad…out in the open.
