Even though the 8 Plus is a physically bigger phone, the XR (and identical screen/case sized 11) actually has a bigger screen. 5.5 inch on the 8 Plus vs. 6.1 inch on the XR & 11. Even the 11 Pro screen (5.8") is smaller than the XR & 11.

The only way to get a bigger iPhone screen than the XR & 11, is to go to the XS Max or 11 Pro Max which both have 6.5 inch screens. The case sizes of the XS Max, 11 Pro Max, and 8 Plus are about the same.

The iPhone 8 is the last iPhone with a home button. Giving up the home button (a physical button is a potential failure point) is no big deal - especially in exchange for a larger screen in a smaller case size.

Face ID on XR/11 works amazing in all lighting. I have well-scared finger tips from decades of woodworking/welding/etc… and Touch ID (the home button) never worked that great for me.
