iRobot Roomba 860 Robotic Vacuum

iRobot Roomba 860 Robotic Vacuum

Stupid outdated technology that can be beaten for less and more.
History of pricing on this product:
$5 cheaper than it was on Amazon when this deal was offered in February.
Was $297 brand new at Target 11/2017
Was $350 brand new at Amazon 8/30

Botvac D3 through D5 lineup has shown up for sale for $180-280 many times in the past and are far superior products. It’s not even close. The D7 is currently on sale at Bed Bath and Beyond for $699.99 which is high but with the 20% coupon they give everyone all the time, it takes it to $560 which isn’t bad but I’d still go with the Roborock S5 for $420ish instead. It’s just more reliable.

In 2017 this may have been a deal. In 2019 this is close to high end pricing for a new device. Most high end Roombas uses camera technology to know where it is and where it’s going. personally I’d rather not have my device running around my house with a camera. Most high end devices these days such as the Botvac D lineup and the Roborock S5 lineup all use lasers to map your house.

This vacuum doesn’t even have mapping with cameras. This is basically high end pricing for a below low end product compared to the competition. This is just really old technology at current pricing. Go look at the Roborock lineup and Botvac lineup and head over to slickdeals and sign up for notifications when they go on sale. This will notify you also if Woot has the product at a decent price (but don’t hold your breath).

Roborock S5 is the best robotvacuum in my opinion for under $450 when they are on sale.
The Botvac D lineup is the best if you wanna spend under $450 when they are on sale.
The Roomba i7+ is the only Roomba I’d look at and it’s $800 when on sale.

Helluva deal for an outstanding AND reliable vacuum. I have the Roomba 830. Been thru 4 Neato’s including returns for things such as humping furniture, batteries that don’t hold a charge, failed LIDAR sensor, the usual for this company. Most trouble prone vacuum out there, period and the company seems not to care. There are more refurbished Neato’s for sale than Heinz has got pickles. Last Neato purchased was at Costco because of their no questions asked policy on returns. Yes, it failed too. Got my money back on that one.

Nice thing about the Roomba is its dirt sensors which few robots have. Based on a concentration of dirt it will go back and forth until the spot is clean and then move on.

Roborock, a Xiaomi Chinese brand, gets 2.5 stars out of 5. Like most the mop feature is a novelty.

Why he’s comparing it with a Roomba 690 is anybody’s guess. The 690 is not even in the same (superior) league as the Roomba 800 and 900 series. Totally different technologies.

He’s comparing the ROBOROCK b/c it’s superior to ROOMBA! I’ve had both and the ROBOROCK is awesome! Roombast are overrated and overpriced, imo!

Reviews of several, including the Roomba 690. If it’s not as good as the 860, then that makes this a great deal. Best robot vacuums in 2023 tested and rated | Tom's Guide

I don’t know what you’re talking about. The link you list LITERALLY says that the D7 is the best robot vacuum. Additionally this review is super old and ignores the fact that the entire D lineup has no-go and mapping. When this review came out, the lower end models did not. Now that they do, they crap all over the Roombas.

The S5 is one of the few mapping robots that allows zone cleaning, which you can say ā€œclean this area this many timesā€ it also allows you to write complicated scripts such as to clean certain areas at certain days and others other days. It has by far the most advanced software of ANY of the robot vacuums. He is absolutely 100% not even close to on point here.

The 860 has less than half the sucking power of the S5 lineup. It’s not even close. 5200 mah vs 3000 mah. Not even close. 58W vs 30W not even close.

Roborock supports alexa and other home voice features. The roomba does not.

S5’s software detects carpet and increases power when carpet is detected and lowers power when it leaves the carpet so it’s less noisy and annoying to people. It also has double the cleaning power of the Roomba. Every comparison online with videos to show proof show that the Roborock cleans far better then the entire Roomba lineup.

Again I highly suggest you watch educational videos such as Best Robot Vacuum 2018 / 2019 - Roomba vs Neato Vs RoboRock vs Deebot - YouTube instead of wasting your time with Tomsguide which uses other people’s stock video and feature lists to compare items rather than, actually testing them.

Tom’s guide thinks mapping is a bad feature because ā€œnot everyone has a smart phoneā€. So, THAT is where you’re getting your information. The guy running a tech website thinks you should go with dumber technology because old people don’t have phones. You guys are funny.

ZOINKS, thanks for the information, promotionbot67.

Yeah, techy stuff is fine but reliability is what matters to me. I got so fed up with the Neato problems . Roomba holds its charge forever, does an incredible job on carpet and floors, and has been reliable for years. This is based on real world experience, not some YouTube channel. I have no patience when it comes to returns.

You want tech, set you back in your seat power, and beauty? Buy the new 2019 BMW X5. It does everything but fly…but I digress. :star_struck:

How many of you commenting are ā€œrobophiles?ā€

No disrespect, but sometimes fans of something overlook flaws in their object of admiratrion.

For example, I have this hand-pump espresso maker that competes well with my $900 machine. But I overlook that it is messy to fill and you should have a paper towel under it when you take it apart.

I think robo vacs are just getting out of the Commodore 64 era of their type of product. Some progress in the past five years, but not ready for prime-time.

I’ve had a couple and am not impressed.

stv6669, thanks for the added info. I bought a Roomba 650 a couple years ago and have really liked having it, but I’m definitely to the point that I’m thinking about getting a more capable unit (my god, no-go lines would be a game changer in my house). Was looking at this just assuming Roomba was still the best in the game, but that appears to not be true. Folks like Neato and those companies used to be pretty rough with their devices, but I like what I’m seeing now that I’m researching more. I appreciate you taking the time to share the info.

I bought a Roomba when they first came out. Their batteries were horrible and died after about 8 months. My girlfriend now uses a Shark ION Robot 750 and it’s been very reliable and cleans very well in her one bedroom condo. It does get stuck sometimes, so we have to prepare the areas ahead of time in her condo, so it doesn’t happen. How does this compare to an ION Robot 750?

most of the people in the robovac threads are indeed, robophiles.
there is no other way to explain how someone would otherwise admit to having purchased 8 or 10 high end robovacs in the past 10 years.

I bought a Roomba 850 about a year ago on here and it is a vast improvement over the Roomba 680. This model has an icon that tells me when the bin is full, and just in case I don’t get the hint, it refuses to do it’s scheduled clean until the bin is emptied. Roomba 850 also is able to find home. My 680 had problems with that after the first year of service. It appears that the only difference between the 850 and 860 is battery size.
