Last year, for the Fake Music Festival derby, I took the Burning Man Festival and turned it into the Churning Man Festival—promoting lactose tolerance. I thought it was amusing. But evidently, I was in the minority because for some odd reason very few Wooters evidently thought Lactose Intolerance was a serious enough issue to wear a fake festival t-shirt for. Okay. My bad.
Instead of just resubmitting that design to see whether popular culture had changed its mind about what I was still sure was a hot-button issue, I decided to completely redo the design using a different societal problem that, only after completing the design, my family assured me even fewer people would be likely to care about: improper kerning.
But I think my family is wrong. I’m sure there are plenty of people out there who—when they see excessive and unattractive and distracting spacing between letters in signs or billboards or, I dare say, occasionally even t-shirt submissions right here on Shirt.Woot—would be willing to support Kerning Awareness by attending a fake benefit concert to raise money promoting visually consistent spacing.
