Is this this newest version? I presume not since it’s refurbished. But, I can’t seem to find that info…

NO. this is the first gen. They are currently releasing the third gen next month. Bought my wife one when it first came out. Still runs great and she loves it. That being said. If you can get it (you cant here anymore) get the 64g model since there is no expandable storage.

So it says I can watch Amazon Prime movies and shows, but can I download and store them for watching later, like when I’m on a (hopefully snake-free) plane?

Per this page http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201460820
"Amazon Prime members can download selected Prime Instant Video titles to Fire phone and Fire Tablets (except Kindle Fire 1st Generation). "

IFF this is a 1st gen tablet, then no. I see someone above stating that this is a first gen, but I am not certain. I do have a 7" fire that I purchased from Woot and it is quite nice, but it looks different due to the different screen size.

[MOD: This is the Kindle Fire HD]

What Generation

Amazon calls this the 2nd of 4 generations.

Others call it the 2012 release.

Per the features:

Prime Instant Video
Prime members also enjoy unlimited, commercial-free streaming of thousands of popular movies and TV episodes such as Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, Thor, Rango, The West Wing, Glee, SpongeBob SquarePants, and Parks and Recreation.

What Generation

Amazon calls this the 2nd of 4 generations.

Some folks call it a Sling Blade, I call it a Kaiser Blade…

Can this be used with T-Mobile?

Per the features:

An AT&T data plan is required to connect to 4G. If you’re not currently an AT&T customer, you can sign up for a data plan right from your device.

This is a second-generation tablet, released in 2012, and you can download some, but not all, of the Prime videos. The movie studios have forbidden Amazon from offering download capabilities on some of their choices. For example, when I was testing this, I was able to download “Casablanca” but was not able to download “The Avengers.”

It seems so.
I cannot figure out how to post a link - but if you search for kindle hd and tmobile sim it should bring up a discussion on the amazon kindle help forum - go to pg 7 and they explain how to change the sim card and how to set it up on the kindle - it seems you have to change the apn.

Can confirm this works, got one of these last time it was on woot, works fine with T-mobile (I’m using the 200 MB a month free option).

But if I just want to use it with wifi, I don’t have to get a data plan, correct?

I like them french fried potaters

Correct.

Gaaaaa!!! I was waiting for deal on these for a couple of months. I finally gave up and got an unlocked Nexus 7 when they came up on a community deal. And of course, on those, you can’t download movies. Oh well…
