You know what? This is pretty awesome, actually. I rooted mine and installed LineageOS 14.1, which allowed me to get Google Meet, Google Home, Skype, Spotify, and more. This is gonna be a nice little base station to to basic home automation and video chats for the kids. It even plays Minecraft better than my kids’ newer phones.
Hey, I’m pretty new to rooting and flashing ROMs. Any major reasons to choose AospExtended 7.1.2 over LineageOS 14.1? I just went with what the xda-devs forum suggested.
Could you link me to the guide you used?
Very interesting. I was starting to wonder what I was really gonna use it for, I do have smart home so might try this. Does it implement with smart things?
If you have a Mac (I don’t) you could use this… but they want you to wait 2 weeks after joining the forum to request the application that does it.
I used the method described in this thread, then I flashed it with the LineageOS build linked to in this thread.
You have to be sure to rename the aboot-13-thor.mbn file to aboot_vuln.mbn for it all to work properly.
The HDX 7 we all got is codenamed “Thor,” so make sure to use those files, and scroll down the list of downloadable LineageOS images to be sure you’re getting the latest version, 14.1.
Finally, here’s another way to do it that is newer, but has different steps. I actually ended up getting the aboot and twrp files from this guy, because I screwed up using the above method and thought the newer files would help. in the end, I was able to use the above method instead because I realized my screw-up occurred when I didn’t replace the “X” in the “HarddiskX” for one of the files at the end of step 6.
The newest version of LineageOS (14.1) is based on Android 7.1.2, I think, which is unsupported by Google, but able to run the smart home apps I mentioned above.
I bought that same LEATHER cover on eBay for $5.74 - just came today and it’s lovely! Although I think I should get one of those glass-plate covers also, because mine already has very light scratch markings right out of the box ![]()

I think it’s about time that I do something with the Kindle.
It’s been sitting in the box ever since I got it.
That’s a great idea. Have been using mine pretty much every day since it arrived. Only used my older tablet as an e-reader. But this Fire HDX has proven capable of performing every task my laptop does, and it’s much more convenient to use. The fact I got it for $1 still amazes me. It’s the electronic device I didn’t know I needed.
I hardly use my Nexus 7 2013 anymore, as I shifted the primary use of it to my Chromebook.
I don’t read eBooks, as every series which I read as an eBook got killed for me.
I’ll probably just trade it in to Amazon for $10.
That works too!
